OvoPro, produced by The EVERY Company through a process called precision fermentation, is an egg-white protein grown by a programmed yeast called Komagataella phaffii rather than a chicken. It is already being used in protein bars, baked goods, protein powders, sauces, and dressings sold through Walmart, Target, and Amazon. The EVERY Company reports orders in the first four months of 2026 were 550% of its entire 2025 volume. A second company, Onego Bio, has also received an FDA "no questions" response for its competing product Bioalbumen. Both are on shelves now.
The FDA's clearance process for these products is not a formal approval. Both companies declared their own ingredient safe under GRAS regulations, notified the FDA, and received a letter stating the agency had "no questions." Federal law requires both products to appear on ingredient labels. The label names to look for are "egg white protein," "ovalbumin," or the brand name OvoPro. The USDA's Bioengineered Food Disclosure rules do not currently require precision-fermented proteins to carry a bioengineered disclosure, leaving most consumers entirely unaware the ingredient exists in their food.
