People have previously stated that we are "not a farm", implying that we aren't "legitimate". I'd like to take a minute to clarify things.
We are an urban farm. This does not mean rolling green pastures, but rather a backyard with relatively dense vegitation. It's a small scale operation. Meant to feed some, not the whole city or county. But it is still a farm in the sense that we have animals, we are growing food, and we are selling it. Someday we'd love to get a plot of agricultural land or something to raise more livestock, but until then, we are an urban operation.
We carry business insurance and I have registered the business as an LLC with the state of Pennsylvania.
We are doing our best to follow PA's regulations for fresh eggs. We keep them refrigerated. We're required to whether they are washed or unwashed to my knowledge. We label the carton with our business name, address, warning to cook thoroughly, and the date of lay for the oldest eggs in the carton. Eggs must be sold within 5 days of lay
As for produce, there are very few if any regulations on freshly picked produce. As long as we don't chop, flash freeze, or otherwise process food, we are within our right to sell produce straight from the ground or off the vine, no red tape.
With our blackberries and raspberries, and other produce on the way, as well as our newest hens soon maturing and laying, we hope you will keep my family and I in mind for when we post future products for sale, whether it is eggs, produce, or our hand poured soaps and candles.
