GHOST ACTIVITY AT THE MINERS HOTEL IN BUTTE, MT

During our investigation at the St James Hospital in Butte. MT, we stayed at the historic Miners Hotel built in 1913, along with investigators from S.L.A.S.H, Spookan Spirit Seekers, Psychic Medium Jennifer Von Behren - Medium, her husband Eric Von Behren and Scott Mercer .
Miners Hotel building was built for the Miner's Savings & Trust Bank, that occupied the 1st floor till about 1960's. The upper floors had furnished rooms for miners and travelers and the basement was occupied by the National Fur Company. After 1960's the space was briefly used as Butte's Post Office.
In 2014 the building was restored into a hotel along with the Fifty-One Below speakeasy bar.
Most rooms are themed after local mines and the years they operated. We booked 5 rooms; The President's room, The Vault room, The Anselmo room, The Lexington room and the Mountain Con room.
There are several ghosts at the Miners Hotel and there was ghost activity in every room we booked. Not only did they response to the voice recorder, but they also used several pieces of equipment to communicate with us.
In the President's room I had 3 ghosts join me during the session and once they left, the female ghost from the ghost picture I posted earlier came in to talk to me. Read about what she told Jennifer under her ghost picture.
The 2nd night I communicated with a very flirty rustic looking miner/cowboy from Finland in the President's room, who had suffered a quick death on the street. The male ghost from previous night was part Finnish as well. During research I found that there was a Finnish community living in Butte in the area called Finntown. In 1910 there were over 4000 Finns in Butte. The part Finn male ghost had been in charge of the bank a short while when the president of the bank had left. He is still looking after the place; as he said "someone has to". He said the ghosts are a fun group at the hotel except for the 2 rowdy ones below. He was born and raised in MT.
The President's room has a secret passage down to the speakeasy bar , which is used by many ghosts.
Before we even arrived to the hotel, Psychic Medium Jennifer Von Behren was contacted by a ghost telling her that the Vault room was haunted and they like to pull the bed sheets off, however after our session, a male ghost told Jennifer that we are nice people and they won't bother us. During our session there we talked to a male and a female ghost first, but soon 3 other ghosts showed up. One of the female ghosts had worked in the bank that had burned down in 1912 and the other female was a nurse, who had worked in the pink surgery room at St James Hospital.
In the Anselmo room there was a female ghost wearing a brown dress, who had worked at the hotel. She likes it when people talk to her.
In The Lexington room we were talking with a female and a male ghost, both very social and like to talk to people. The female ghost was also in the President's room the day before. She really liked the flash lights and said 'Let's do this again". The male ghost was a miner and he used to gamble at the hotel. He also said that there is a little boy ghost running around in the hotel ,who they call Junior. Jennifer also saw a ghost looking in thru' one of the windows in this room.
During the session in the Mountain Con room, there was a female and a male ghost. The male ghost opens the closet door in the separate bedroom, tho' he said it is not easy to do unless he is upset. Apparently he was upset at someone down the hall.
Jennifer feels that the ghosts come from behind the closet wall as it is a pathway with constant energy going thru' it.
We also did a short session down at the speakeasy bar the next day and talked to 2 male ghosts. One of them was the flirty Finnish miner from the President's room and the other male, who's name was Joe, used to work as a bartender for secret parties long time ago, when the town was very shady with lots of murders and people disappearing. He was also a miner and the two were friends.
In addition to all the ghosts mentioned, Jennifer also saw a female ghost standing outside the President's room hallway and an apparition of another female by the registration hallway.
On the 3rd floor Jennifer saw a male ghost wearing a fireman's outfit from early 1900s and someone was telling her there is a fire.
We were told that there had been several fires at the hotel.
There was heavier energy in the ice machine area on the 2nd floor and by the Cora Mine room hallway Jennifer heard a woman screaming. There is lot of residual energy in old buildings in general.
Miners Hotel building was listed in National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
The Miners Hotel rooms are comfortable with modern amenities and the staff is super nice. There is a special feel in the hotel, especially in the speakeasy bar below with the very cool secret passage and the secret entry to the bar.
We want to thank the hotel staff for all their help during our stay.
We did not find anything negative in the hotel during our investigation. All the ghosts are super nice with great personalities and they really love interacting with people who wish to do so.
Great hotel all and all.

I don't generally post voice files from the DR-60 voice recorder due to the evps being unclear, but here is a pretty clear response from a male spirit in the President's Room at the Miners Hotel in Butte, MT.

Here is a part of a 36 min session at the Miners Hotel President's Room in Butte MT that we investigated with S.L.A.S.H, Jennifer Von Behren - Medium, Spookan Spirit Seekers and Eric Von Behren.
There were 3 ghosts in my room in the beginning of the session and when they left, the ghost lady from the mirror picture at the Speak Easy that I posted earlier came in to talk to me.
This is about a minute of the 20 min activity with her and she kept on going with the flash light even when I wasn't in the room.

Here is a link to the 2nd short story of the paranormal series based on actual stories and legends of each place written.
The writer tells a story of what was before there was a ghost adding her own intuitive feel of the place and her thoughts of the said story .

This is the room Grace and I stayed in at The Miners Hotel in Butte. We had 2 beds with a door separating. The bathroom was directly across from my bed- as pictured. Saturday night we finally went to bed and around 2 or 3 am I was laying facing the door to the bathroom, which was shut. I saw- who I assumed was Grace- walk from the bathroom door, past the sink and around the corner to her room. It then occurred to me that the bathroom door did not open, she didn't stop at the sink, and I never heard her open or shut her bedroom door. In the morning I asked her if she had gotten up and she said, "No, Why?" Hmmmmm- note to self: always let a video record all night!

Here is a picture from the Speak Easy bar at the Miners Hotel in Butte ,MT.
I took 3 pictures back to back of this hallway with the mirror on the door at the end of the hallway and only one of them had the short woman in it. Noone was in the hallway at the time. A Post will follow of our investigation at the Miners Hotel and the St. James Hospital that you do not want to miss. In order to see the end of the hallway, i had to zoom ,which makes the picture unclear unfortunately.

GHOSTS AT THE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW AND THE CHRONICLE BUILDINGS, SPOKANE, WA

Last October we did a brief walk-thru' along with Psychic Medium Jennifer Von Behren of the 1891 Spokesman-Review Building and Tower with the Spokesman-Review reporter Cannon Barnett.
Neither the Review or the Chronicle building has ever been investigated before, so in order to try and find out who the ghosts that we saw in each area might be, one has to research the history of the buildings and the area they are in as well as do an actual investigation to try and connect with the ghosts again.
In the back of the Newsroom on the 4th floor of the Review building Jennifer saw a short elderly female spirit and a male spirits, who said he had been a reporter.
In 1912 Daily Chronicle editor Edward H. Rothrock was murdered in room 21 on the second floor of the Review building.
He was well liked and very dedicated to his job often being the 1st to arrive and the last to leave.
Up until 1894 the Review building was strictly a business building, but from 1895 on there were lodging and boarding rooms available as well. The proprietor and the landlady of the rooms in 1900 was Charlotte P. Carew. After being in Spokane only for a short while, she passed away in March of 1901 at the age of 62 possibly on the 3rd floor of the Review building.
In March of 1902 Mrs. M.A. Finnegan became the new proprietor and the lodging business from there on was known as the Hotel Review. It was in operation till mid 1920s and changed hands over 10 times.
Over the years there were 3 other recorded deaths at the Review Hotel.
In the archives room Jennifer saw a tiny female spirit, who had a strong Asian accent and she seemed apprehensive. She said it was a cleaning area where she worked.
Jennifer felt that the basement had had a lot of water at some point as she can hear chaos and lot of running. The reporters confirmed that the basement had flooded several times with a lot of damage.
The area streets flooded several times in 1894.
In the back corner of the basement Jennifer saw a male and a tiny short haired female spirit. The female followed us down from the upstairs. The 2 spirits knew each other. The male spirit used to work down there with coal. He said that the area there was way open before.
The female spirit wants to be acknowledged and she still feels like everyone's boss. She moves around the building sometimes and wants people to like her.
The male spirit doesn't like to hang down there as much.
Both spirits interacted with the equipment we had set out for them.
Jennifer could also hear another male spirit down there, who had been there during the flood.
In the tower area Jennifer feels like there is a doctor or a dentist there. She sees a female spirit, who used to be some kind of a teacher. Possibly a private teacher for select families and for a small group of kids. She was fascinated by the equipment and their colors and was sitting on the floor trying to play with everything.
She was a wife of a former employee.
She loves people and would love more visitors. She said that people used to be able to come there. She wants the remodel up there to be done.
She also goes to other buildings with other spirits as downtown Spokane is quite the social scene and her friends come hang out in the tower as well.
Jennifer also saw a male spirit, who's name was John in one of the rooms on our way down.
The only reference I saw about a passed on female teacher was Ms. Rice, who taught children in the church that was located on the site where the Review building is now.
The last area we went to was the "haunted" staircase located in the Chronicle building. It is accessible only to the tenants of the apartments, that used to be business offices till 2016.
On the 4th floor staircase Jennifer saw an agitated and a very drunk male spirit, who needed help. Jennifer feels that he passed away that way and he had been there a while. We caught his voice on a voice recorder and he also used the equipment we set out.
Jennifer also saw another male spirit there, who had been shot in the head.
The Chronicle building doesn't have any recorded deaths, so again one has to look into the history of the area and what was there before.
Hauntings can be related to the land, a building, a person or an object. Energy attracts energy and spirits roam. These spirits can be from the 1800s or the more recent years. Even from another state.
I found 8 recorded deaths of people with a gun shot wound in the head and 3 deaths caused due to alcohol.
In this block alone , there used to be 2 undertakers establishments and a morgue from 1889 on till about early 1900. In those early days, those that died , some even from out of state ended up in one of the morgues or the undertakers parlors. There were many undertakers on the surrounding blocks as well in later years.
In 1889 The Commercial Hotel was on the corner of Riverside and Lincoln street , where there were 3 reported deaths.
From Riverside to Sprague and Monroe to Lincoln there were lodging houses on all sides after the 1889 Great fire, where people passed away ending up in one of the morgues in the area and some died on the streets.
We don't know who all the spirits were that we encountered, but there are many possibilities to go from .
We want to thank Cannon Barnett for inviting us to this awesome building, Brooke Lauerman and all those at the Spokesman-Review involved in making this walk thru' possible.
Also a shout out to Dana and Summer at the Spokane Public Library Inland NW Special Collections for the research help and Logan at the City of Spokane Historical Preservation Office.
You can also find the article written by Cannon Barnett of this walk thru' in the Oct 21,2025 Spokesman-Review issue.
