Fall is a great time to make friends with landscaping companies because they’re always looking for places to offload shredded leaves for free. Make sure they’re shredded! They’ll break down a lot faster.

Don’t give up if you have clay soil! After a few years of doing this, your clay soil will be rich and fertile and able to withstand drought because of all of the organic matter content. Cover cropping for the win!

I should have followed my own advice when I bought this house because if I did, then I would have reconsidered putting one of my vegetable fields along the rock wall where it is. The back 25% of every bed is overly shaded and unproductive. Or I might have left it exactly where it is and dealt with the unproductivity in favor of maximizing the space that I have. Gardening is about making choices and working with what you have, and that includes the knowledge that you have at the time of making your decisions. There are no wrong answers! Plants want to grow, and they will try to grow no matter where your garden bed is.

This is the third year in a row that I’ve done this, and every year the things that people will barter for surprise and delight me. It’s such a cool system for when I have too much. Bring back bartering!
