I raise chickens and turkeys so these are the two poultry I reference here. Zippering is a term used in poultry incubation to describe the final stage where a baby cracks the eggshell in a continuous, zigzag, or circular line to break out and hatch. Poults (turkey babies) should zipper in a circular line. Chicks (chicken babies) tend to zigzag more. All poultry use what’s called an egg tooth on the top tip of their beak to initially pip (break) the egg and then zipper it with that tooth to hatch. The egg tooth typically falls off during the zippering process or shortly after hatching. I am always amazed at the zippered turkey eggs as the shells and membranes are thick!

Cutting lilacs to keep:
Sharp snips
Remove leaves (save for skin care apothecary)
Pound ends with meat tenderizer so the bark lifts and the branch splits.
Dunk stem in hot water for 15 seconds.
Transfer to vase with room temperature water.
Keep out of direct sunlight for the first 12 hours.
Make your home smell amazing 🥰
Happy lilac season!

Time for the machete: Comfrey is almost knee high…chop and drop for fertilizing.
My top three leaves to chop&drop:
Comfrey, nettles, dandelion.
Chop and drop is literally that…remove the leaves and than lay them somewhere on the ground for fertilizing while they decompose and add a mulching layer. I also boost the flock and set up a salad feeder bar for chickens that don’t forage as well as I would like them to 🤣
I highly recommend doing this with comfrey as the plant is prone to a mildew. Cutting it back helps with airflow for prevention and boosts the plants output.

I got four swarm setups out today! 🤞🐝
Two hung on trees and two ground level. I have had success catching swarms in both the horizontal hive and a tree box. The nuc is a new experiment!
Honey bee colonies tend to swarm in mid May-June in my area.
For queen and scout bee attractant, I use lemongrass essential oil. There are synthetic options available for purchase and some beekeepers make an attractant from a decease queen bee.
Who else has swarm bee boxes up?
Wish me luck on having bees move in! 🐝❤️
