Ohio has sand dunes, and most people never learn that until they are standing on one. Oak Openings Preserve Metropark in Swanton spreads across roughly 5,000 acres of oak savanna, wetland and vegetated sand dune, making it the largest park in the Metroparks Toledo system. Early settlers named the region for the widely spaced oaks scattered over open prairie, a welcome contrast to the dense Great Black Swamp they had just crossed. The Nature Conservancy counts this sandy landscape among its 200 Last Great Places on Earth.

More than 70 miles of trail run through the preserve, including hiking loops, a paved all purpose path, dedicated horse trails, cross country ski routes and mountain bike singletrack. The Sand Dune Trail crosses one of the largest open dunes in the park. Birders come for whip-poor-wills, lark sparrows, indigo buntings and spring songbird migration, and the wider region shelters more than 180 uncommon plant and animal species. The Cannaley Treehouse Village, the only public treehouse village in the country, sits within the preserve alongside campgrounds and cabins. Have you visited Oak Openings Preserve Metropark?
