Cinder Ridge Farm

Cinder Ridge Farm For over a decade, Joe Snow has been collecting and restoring 1800s log structures in Surry County.

These historic buildings have been carefully relocated to Cinder Ridge Farm to preserve our region’s heritage and share it with the community. The farm features three complete homesteads—each representing a slice of 19th-century life—with more restorations currently in progress. Alongside these buildings, we also raise historic breeds of livestock to offer a fully immersive experience. Every year,

we host an Annual Harvest Festival, a free community event that brings the farm to life with historical demonstrations, a traditional chicken stew, and a covered dish lunch.

What an incredible way to wrap up an amazing week at Summer Camp! 🌞🚜🌱

Our campers spent their final day harvesting potatoes straight from the garden, taking a hayride to the root cellar, and exploring the great outdoors on a nature hike and scavenger hunt.

The celebration continued with an ice cream social shared with family and friends, followed by a special awards ceremony. Each camper proudly received their very own “Homesteader Certificate” in recognition of everything they experienced, learned, and accomplished throughout the week—from farm chores and historic trades to cooking, harvesting, and hands-on homesteading adventures.

We are so proud of each and every camper for their enthusiasm, curiosity, hard work, and willingness to try new things. Thank you to all of the families who joined us and helped make this week such a success!

Until next summer, keep exploring, learning, and growing. Congratulations, Homesteaders! 🌾🐓🍦

We didn’t get to post about summer camp yesterday so we’re sharing an update today and saving the finale for tomorrow! ☀️🌾

We packed so much fun into yesterday’s adventures. Campers started the morning with exciting water games before learning how to make homemade apple cider. They had the opportunity to watch a blacksmith in action and discover the importance of historic trades, then hopped on a hayride out to the farm to pick fresh produce straight from the fields.

To top it all off, everyone enjoyed popsicles, tried their hand at leather stamping, and spent the day exploring, playing, and learning together.

Day 2 of Cinder Ridge Summer Camp was one for the books! 🌧️🐄🧈

The rain may have cut our day a little short, but it certainly didn’t stop the fun. Campers rolled up their sleeves and churned their own butter, then enjoyed it fresh on homemade biscuits baked on the cook stove. They stepped back in time to learn about 1800s cooking methods and traditional food preservation techniques, discovering how families lived and worked on the farm long ago.

When the storm rolled in, we brought the fun indoors with old-fashioned games and a few exciting rounds of Harvest Bingo!

What an incredible Opening Day at Cinder Ridge Summer Camp! 🌾☀️

Our campers jumped right into farm life with a hayride tour of our historic farm, got up close with our amazing animals, tackled fun farm chores, learned the art of shingle making, and created colorful tie-dye t-shirts they'll be showing off all summer long.
The day wrapped up with an exciting relay race that had everyone cheering!
