What we couldn’t accomplish if we were to work with ‘nature of …’ instead of imposing our human will!
Cities around the world face persistent problems with cigarette litter. Cigarette butts are among the most common types of trash found on streets and sidewalks, and they contain plastic fibers and toxic chemicals that can harm the environment.
In Sweden, an experimental environmental initiative explored an unusual solution by training crows to collect discarded cigarette butts. The project uses specially designed machines that dispense small food rewards when birds drop cigarette filters into a collection slot.
Crows are known for their exceptional intelligence. Studies have shown they can solve puzzles, recognize human faces, and learn complex behaviors through observation. Because of these cognitive abilities, researchers believe crows can be trained to perform simple tasks such as picking up litter.
The concept behind the project is to reduce urban waste while studying animal learning behavior. If the birds successfully collect cigarette butts, the machines reward them with food, reinforcing the behavior.
Although still experimental and limited in scale, the project demonstrates how creative environmental solutions can combine technology, animal intelligence, and urban sustainability efforts.
