The queen isn’t really a dictator, but there always has to be one! If the queen dies, the bees make a new one. Without a queen the hive will cease to exist.

A queen cup, is a wax cell that the bees have made specifically for raising a new queen. It hangs vertical instead of horizontal and it larger than most honeycomb. Once the queen lays an egg in it, the bees are prepping to swarm and make a new hive.

Smoke is important in the beeyard and not just for preventing stings.

A light smoke can make the bees run down into their hive a so they aren’t crushed when you close the lid back up
