Coleman Meadows Farm Coleman Meadows Farm is home to a happy herd of grass fed Water Buffalo. We operate a water buffalo dairy in the beautiful Alberni Valley.

Take a deep breath...it is October...and the Fall colours are amazing. Some rain is slowly greening up the fields, the cows and water buffalo are enjoying their days and just hanging out! Pasture days or being out of the barn, are coming to a close as the weather changes, but right now it is a great time of year. A precious red and white baby was born this week - Dahlia had Ariel! We are slowly putting the garden to bed and enjoying every moment on the farm. Our market is open each Saturday from 10 - 2

What a difference a week makes! We had an awesome Alberni Valley Food Security Society Family Farm Day last Sunday. We love seeing the families and folks coming out to enjoy the farm and animals. It is a wrap! We finished our last forage bales off of the Somass Estuary this week. It is a gorgeous spot, lots of bears and wildlife! The water buffalo girls are heading in and out of the barn as pasture is pretty well done, but the rains may bring back some grass if it stays warm. The garden is slowly being harvested and preparation for fall and winter is underway. Our market is open Saturday from 10 - 2

The farm and all of our animals are getting ready for Alberni Valley Food Security Society Family Farm Day on Sunday September 20 from 11-3. We will be closed Saturday to get the farm ready. We love Family Farm Day as it brings families out to celebrate local agriculture.

It is Alberni District Fall Fair weekend! Our farm market is open this Saturday -- but next Saturday we will be closed on the Saturday in preparation for Alberni Valley Food Security Society Family Farm Day which is Sunday September 20 (11am - 3pm)! September is a busy month and the water buffalo are coming in earlier each day. The garden is still thriving and we are putting away vegetables for winter. The farm is dry but the weather is cool. Our youngest buffalo - Lance (can you spot him?) is pretty cute and is very friendly! Our market is open this Saturday from 10 - 2

September - Labour Day Weekend, that means Port Alberni Salmon Festival! We had some glorious rain early this week and then some cooler temperatures, we all gave a sigh of relief!
Our young water buffalo mother Lacey had a lovely small boy, he is pretty cute and we have called him Lance! The garden is producing like mad, lots of fruit, veggies, flowers and berries. As the day light fades the girls and their young head into the barn. We are open Saturday from 10 - 2,

The last weekend of August! We can't imagine where the days have gone. Lots of harvesting in the garden, while the shadows are longer the bounty is plentiful. Getting out into the barn in the morning it is starting to be dark, and even though we are in denial...we celebrate the seasons!
Tess didn't want to be last and she tried every which way to get in the parlour. Meanwhile, Boots was enjoying his morning coffee with his favourite Sam mug!

A dry afternoon, around 4:15 a clap of thunder and dry lightening and moments later smoke on the Beaufort Range. Not long after Mosaic and BC wildfire Service were on it. Thank you! We always worry about our friend's, neighbours and community, drought and fire becomes what we anticipate. We are grateful for the response. Meanwhile back at the farm the animal family is oblivious to our worry. Allie is in the alley...and the garden is bursting at the seams. We are busy planting for fall and pulling our vegetables to store for winter.

Farmers, ranchers and community members all over this province are helping one another through some devastating drought and fire. Help support our farmers by buying direct and Buy BC! Ask for BC products in grocers we can all do better to support local!
Here on the farm we can't help but reflect on the dry, not like other parts of the province! Always time to pull together as communities and as a province to help one another!
The water buffalo feel the same way and wonder what would happen if our farm and forest were on fire? Water storge for us is crucial, capturing that rain that fell all year is critical! We love our farm, animals and community!

As BC lives through another year of catastrophic fires and drought, water on the farm is very much on our minds. We store the water that falls as rain in massive ponds every year. This water is used for washing down our dairy parlour, garden irrigation and livestock water. So, every morning at 6 we start our watering the gardens while we do the barn chores. This morning we noticed a lot of water on the livestock path and Ione was having a blast! After a huge leak -- that meant digging up and fixing the pipe! At least someone was having fun.
This evening the smokey sky makes for gorgeous sunsets.
