Hedgerows shape the landscape more than we often realise! 🌳

Planted at the right time of year, new hedgerows establish while the land is still dormant, giving roots time to develop before the demands of spring growth begin. What looks like a simple line of young plants is, in reality, long-term infrastructure for nature.

At Wendling Beck, hedgerows are designed to reconnect habitats, support farmland birds, provide shelter for insects and mammals and strengthen ecological resilience across the wider landscape.🌱

This is slow, deliberate restoration work, building structure into the land that will support wildlife for decades to come.

Wildlife doesn’t just live in landscapes. It depends on them. 🌍

From birds lifting off at dawn to insects weaving through grassland, every species plays a role in the rhythm of the land. And when habitats are connected, restored and given space to function, wildlife has the chance to truly thrive.

On World Wildlife Day, we’re celebrating the species that make Wendling Beck what it is and the landscapes that support them every single day. 🌾🦉

Because protecting wildlife isn’t just about saving one species. It’s about restoring the whole system!

Spring starts quietly. 🌱

Even in February, nature is beginning to stir. Early buds push through cold ground, insects reappear on brighter days and bird activity starts to shift as the seasons turn.

At Wendling Beck, these early signs mark the beginning of a new cycle and a powerful reminder of nature’s resilience when landscapes are given the space to recover.🍃

🌿 The Wendling Way - "Nature never hurries, yet everything is accomplished."

At Wendling Beck, we’re taking that wisdom to heart. Over 2,000 acres of Norfolk landscape are being transformed from traditional farmland into a thriving mosaic of species-rich grasslands, wetlands, and woodland.

The Wendling Way lets visitors experience this transformation first-hand, from restored heathland and wet woodland to rare flora returning to the landscape. This trail celebrates nature, heritage, and a sustainable future for our communities.

Whether it’s restoring rivers, creating homes for wildlife, or enjoying the beautiful scenery, every step on the Wendling Way is a step toward a wilder Norfolk. 👣

🌿 Our Wendling Beck Story

The Wendling Beck journey began in early 2020. With declining farm subsidies, growing concern about climate change, and the world pausing during COVID, we took a step back to rethink how we could make a difference.

We realised that to help nature, support local communities, and tackle biodiversity loss, we needed scale and collaboration. And that’s exactly what we did.

Today, Wendling Beck is about creating habitats, mitigating climate impact, restoring biodiversity, and sharing our experiences with others. We might not be able to change the world alone, but we can inspire change - one step at a time.

Spotting the Cuckoo at Wendling Beck 🪶

This stunning photo is a throwback, taken at Wendling Beck, capturing one of our most fascinating visitors. While you won’t see them in February, keep an eye out as spring approaches, cuckoos usually arrive around April and May across Norfolk.

Famous for their distinctive call and remarkable breeding behaviour, cuckoos are just one of the many species that benefit from Wendling Beck’s restored grassland, wetland and woodland habitats.

Visit Wendling Beck to see how our nature recovery work supports wildlife across the site.🌿

Small actions. Lasting impact 🌳

Volunteers play a vital role in bringing Wendling Beck’s landscapes back to life. From hedgerow planting to ongoing habitat care, their time and effort help strengthen wildlife corridors, support biodiversity and build resilience across the site.

Hedgerows are more than boundaries. They provide shelter, food and safe passage for birds, insects and mammals, while helping reconnect fragmented habitats across the wider landscape.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who gives their time to support nature recovery at Wendling Beck. To learn more about getting involved, visit our website🌱

Science + nature = better outcomes for wildlife🐮

We monitor wildlife across Wendling Beck to understand how habitat change is influencing biodiversity in real time. Tracking species presence, numbers and behaviour helps us see what’s working, identify pressure points and refine habitat management year after year.🌱

Science and nature work best together, leading to stronger, more resilient outcomes for wildlife. To learn more about how monitoring supports long-term nature recovery at Wendling Beck, visit our website.
