Absolute truth from Baroness Batters

Baroness Minette Batters calls for 'radical reset' in Defra 🗣️

Giving evidence to the National Resilience Committee this week, Baroness Batters said food was ‘not at the heart of Whitehall' and was not represented, warning it ‘lacked a plan'.

Referring to the cabinet table in the last parliament, in previous parliaments and the current parliament, as well as the ever changing faces of the department, she said Defra did not have the ‘commercial expertise and acumen' needed right now to appropriately address food insecurity.

Today is the summer solstice.

The longest day.

The shortest night.

The year gives us its brightest coin, then starts spending it.

From here, the light slowly starts walking back towards winter.

Not all at once. Not dramatically. Just quietly, day by day.

A reminder, perhaps, to notice the good things while they are full in your hands.

The long evenings. The warm fields. The birdsong at stupid o’clock.

The brief, golden madness of June.

A cow can test inconclusive.
A farm can be shut down.
A family can lose an animal.
And then the post-mortem can come back saying there was no visible TB.

That is the bit people outside farming rarely see.

Bovine TB is serious. Nobody sensible pretends otherwise.

However, the way the system lands on farmers can be brutal.

Nearly 20,000 cattle were slaughtered under TB control measures in England in the year to March 2026.

That does not mean every animal was visibly ill.
It means the system decided they had to go.

And when a system has that much power over a farm business, the public should understand the human cost behind the letter.

Please let me be clear this is not about ignoring disease.

It is about asking whether farmers are being treated like partners in disease control or collateral damage in a process they have no choice but to follow.

Farming is not just fields and fresh air.

Sometimes it is a man being told the animal he cared for is gone, the farm is closed and the answer is still: “procedure.”
