PRIMO GIORNO

🌿CIVICA Project: study visit to Athens, 14–18 September 2026
DAY ONE
We begin the three days of visits at the Centre of the Earth https://www.organizationearth.org/learning-centers, created and run by Organization Earth. It is an environmental education and urban sustainability centre located inside a city park. It lies about 6 km from the centre of Athens and is conceived as a physical meeting place for people of different ages interested in rethinking urban lifestyles.
In the morning we gather in a shaded area near a small vegetable garden and a paddock that is also used for hippotherapy. Nikoletta, the project contact person for the Greek association, introduces us to the morning's activity.
It is one of the workshops most frequently offered to groups of children, who are the NGO's main educational target. The activity consists of recognising, observing and harvesting the vegetables from the garden, which are then cooked together with pasta in a large pot. It is a "cooking together" experience, and that is precisely the name of the activity.
One of the aims of the study visit is to allow the participating organisations to learn about the methods and ways of working of the host organisation. This morning we therefore have the opportunity to experience the space and take part in a typical Organization Earth workshop first-hand.
We eat what we cooked during the workshop and, after lunch, we move a few hundred metres away to visit the Queen Amalia Tower Estate / Pyrgos Vasilissis winery https://www.pyrgosvasilissis.gr/en/ .
A place and a business of historical value, the estate was commissioned by Amalia, the first queen of Greece, in the mid-19th century as a model centre for agriculture and animal husbandry. Inspired by the "Megali Idea" (the "Great Idea"), the political and cultural project aimed at the liberation of the entire Greek nation, Queen Amalia had an artificial hill built in 1857, adding it to the six already existing. The property thus took the name Eptalofos ("Seven Hills"). The seven hills were dedicated to the Argonauts of Greek mythology: Jason, Pollux, Castor, Tiphys, Heracles, Orpheus and Peleus.
Today the estate uses organic techniques in the management of the vineyard and the winery. In its 4 hectares of vineyard, new plantings favour native Greek varieties. Olive oil and pistachios are also produced, and there are horses, chickens and beehives.
The facility lends itself to visits in which historical value is combined with agronomic, tasting and commercial aspects.
The afternoon continues in one of the educational spaces managed by Organization Earth, where Despina, an educator from the organisation, leads a workshop introducing the concept and some elements of civic agriculture through an interactive learning path made up of sensory tests, quizzes and storytelling, tools she regularly uses in workshops with visiting groups.
The last workshop activity of the day is the transplanting of cabbage seedlings in the small vegetable garden. Athens' warm climate (today it is about 30°C) makes it possible to transplant even in mid-September.
Unfortunately, we are unable to visit the Community Garden of Petroupoli https://observatory.sustainable-greece.com/en/practice/social-organic-garden-petroupoli.2541.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawUvFTtleHRuA2FlbQIxMABwZG9mAXNydGMGYXBwX2lkEDIyMjAzOTE3ODgyMDA4OTIAAR4w9XKSWtiXkyfTM2q88IMWtkn_PsvIV-hvpOq31SkRVx0kpxojWuT72WjLWQ_aem_7IiVE7wNNHySq-nRzA8JKg, due to a tree safety problem that occurred the previous day. We have nevertheless included the profile dedicated to this initiative, which Organization Earth had identified as one of the good practices, in the Baseline Study of our project.
