We spotted this weka wandering through the property — a very rare sight in this part of Waiheke and certainly not something we’re used to seeing here.

Weka are one of New Zealand’s wonderfully curious native flightless birds, and this one seemed quite happy exploring its new surroundings.

Has anyone else on Waiheke spotted a weka recently? We’d love to know how far they’re spreading.

This November, Mike Spratt is bringing the story of Destiny Bay to Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown for three special evenings celebrating the release of his new book, Forged in Fire.

Join Mike for the story behind an improbable journey to Waiheke Island, the creation of Destiny Bay, and more than two decades spent pursuing an ambitious vision in one of New Zealand’s most remarkable places.

Each evening includes a glass of Destiny Bay, a conversation with Mike, and a signed copy of Forged in Fire to take home.
