Admiral Maltings partners with California farmers to source quality, local grain that we floor malt to produce exceptional, hand-crafted malt. Through our unique mix of modern technology and traditional practices, we aim to both unlock and capture California's terroir in our malt, offering a truly exceptional ingredient and experience. Admiral Maltings was founded by two long-time San Francisco br

ewing industry veterans, Ron Silberstein of ThirstyBear Brewing Company and Dave McLean of Magnolia Brewing Company, along with Curtis Davenport, who has an extensive background in organic farming and small batch malting. Together, we partner with California farmers to source quality grain and produce exceptional, hand-crafted malt. Our malt not only helps brewers make great beer, but it also enables them to operate more sustainably and to deepen their connection with local agriculture. Our malthouse is located in Alameda, California, and we're happy to call the Bay Area our home! Our 20,000 square-foot building was originally a World War II-era naval dry goods facility, but is now the site of the first floor malting facility in California since pre-Prohibition and California's only CCOF certified malting operation. SAVE THE DATE: IT'S THE MALT is back!

Join us on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 1–5 PM at Admiral Maltings in Alameda for our third annual celebration of malt, beer, whiskey, and California-grown grain.

Expect incredible artisan beers, California Single Malt whiskey, live music, educational panels, malt house tours, homebrewers, local food, and the people who bring grain to glass.

Early Bird Special: The first 25 ticket buyers receive VIP admission for the price of General Admission.

The tools of the trade.

We've added a few modern touches over the years... conveyor belts, pumps, a glycol-chilled germination floor, and a custom-built kiln... but we're still proud to practice a craft that has been passed down for centuries.

Many of the tools we use today would look familiar to maltsters from generations ago. That's because floor malting remains a hands-on process, one that develops character and flavor in ways no other malting method can replicate.

Paired with grain sourced from the multigenerational family farms we work with across California, the result is a truly unique malt and a product we're proud to make every day.

We love Alameda and are honored to be part of such a vibrant community of small businesses, makers, and creative people....

Admiral co-founder Ron Silberstein and Bay Area brewing veteran Kim Sturdavant are out there every day spreading the word about California-grown grain and traditionally crafted floor malt.

They're not the only ones telling our story. Our incredible customers like Ed Gobbo of Harmonic Brewing (pictured in blue) help connect drinkers to their local farmers and maltsters of Northern California.
