A stranger was awed by our outdoor chickens

She stopped to roll down her window in the middle of the road while we were doing chores, she had never seen chickens outside of a barn before. She just needed to sit and watch for a minute.

I wish I had a minute to tell this stranger that this is how food is supposed to be. I was proud that she was in awe of what we have going, but it was quickly mixed with sadness that we are still so disconnected from our food.

Perhaps if we weren’t so disconnected from our food, our nation wouldn’t be losing farmland so quickly.

I was 20 years old at college when I saw this handsome guy with bright blue eyes. He was an engineer and I was there for social work, so the the only class we had together was a core subject class.

I went often with friends to watch baseball games, a game I’ve spent years enjoying watching my brother play. I found out Joel was on the team.

That winter he worked up the nerve to ask me on a date to dinner at Max & Erma’s (that’s now closed) and he happily bought dinner and my dessert. I felt awful later finding out one scoop of ice cream was $5. We were poor college kids!

We talked mostly about faith, food, and farming and the rest is history as they say. He turned this non-farm girl into his farming & life partner and I’m so glad he did.

A farmhouse used to stand where I’m standing.

I never met Joel’s grandmother, but I hope she’d be proud.

Proud that the land she used to call home is still being called “home.”

Proud that the land she used to tend to is still being tended.

Proud that these trees she planted are still giving shade.

We don’t know if our kids will one day take over the farm, but we’ll preserve it and tend it to give them a chance, because it’s the same chance someone took on us.
