Farming isn’t for the faint of heart.

As we begin a new month, I just have to brag a minute on Joel Dille and his hard work and faithfulness to this farm and place we call home 💚 we couldn’t do it without him!

We never knew anything about fresh milled flour until our youngest was born scratching day and night.

He spent months with socks on his hands, and it went on like this for 18 months while I tried everything under the sun.

4 days after I made fresh milled bread, his skin was completely clear.

I cried.

This is why fresh milled flour matters to our family, and it’s the reason we’re sharing something new. More soon.

*this is not medical advice, just our family’s story and experience.

Pennsylvania alone has lost over 200 farms in a single year, and the overall U.S. rate of loss is 40 acres per HOUR.

Once land is sold, it’s turned into housing developments, strip malls, or data centers.

The small farmer is feeling the squeeze as large corporate farms produce food at wildly low grocery store prices, but that’s not the true cost of that item.

That food is cheap because top soil was eroded, the natural environment and pollinators were destroyed, and we pay for it again later in our healthcare costs.

We are working hard every day to produce food that is good for our land AND our bodies. Both are possible.

Do you know of a local farmer near you?

We all need stuff we don’t have.

The LOCAL grocery stores that started in the early 1900s were because the same thing is still true- we all need something we ourselves don’t grow.

I don’t know of anyone that grows 100% of their own food without bartering, trading, and/or supporting others in some shape or form. There are quite a few meals I’ve prepared over the years that are completely Farm57 meals, but it doesn’t happen regularly.

So instead of purchasing from Big Ag and relying on the big system (hello 2020), what’s one thing you can grow that can help you be more self sustainable, and/or help others fill a gap?

Let us hear in the comments what you would grow or raise!

Reviews like this are so meaningful. We put so much of ourselves into the farm to grow a clean and flavorful product, and knowing others can taste it when they try it…that’s a win. Thank you, Liann.

A stranger was awed by our outdoor chickens

She stopped to roll down her window in the middle of the road while we were doing chores, she had never seen chickens outside of a barn before. She just needed to sit and watch for a minute.

I wish I had a minute to tell this stranger that this is how food is supposed to be. I was proud that she was in awe of what we have going, but it was quickly mixed with sadness that we are still so disconnected from our food.

Perhaps if we weren’t so disconnected from our food, our nation wouldn’t be losing farmland so quickly.

Can you see how your food is grown? What do you wanna know?👇
