We’ve been doing some soft releases of some of our fawns the last few weeks. They have the ability to decide when they are ready to leave on their own. A few left just after a few days but we’ve had a few stay close by, especially in the evenings. We rehabbed 21 fawns this year, being able to release 18 of them.

I’ve got some littles in the nursery this week! I’ve had some help with the squirrels from my good friend, Margaret. She has the squirrel touch! 🐿️ I’m babysitting while she’s out of town. The baby raccoon is a late baby for the year! He will be transferred to a rehabber near Statesville this week where he can be with other raccoons his age to prepare for release soon!

When there’s so many disappointments that come with rehabbing, it always feels good to get one right.

I picked up this guy Monday evening after he was struck by a truck. Honestly, when I arrived, I thought he was already dead. As the Sheriff deputy helped me load him in my car, I was already planning a euthanasia when I got him home. But…I have a hard time giving up. I said “I’ll give him meds and get him comfortable for the night and see how he is in the morning.” This tough guy reminded me just how resilient these wild animals can be. Several broken ribs, head trauma, and plenty of road rash, it only took him 3 days to tell me to take him back to his mommy. SO THAT’S WHAT WE DID!

Stevie the blind deer graduated from a single pen to the outdoor pen with some older fawns today. I was a little nervous to see how she would react, but this girl is resilient and so adaptable! Still not confident to release her but she may prove me wrong! She surprises me with every change I throw at her!

She’s finally decided he belongs to her, and she is smitten over him. We’ve named him Eddie and EmmyLou is being the best mama to him.

Well…an EmmyLou update!

After days of checking her and no progress, we decided it was best to do a C-Section. Baby was sitting very low in her uterus with no desire to come up to the birth canal. Once we opened her up, we found that her intestines had managed to sit up on top of her uterus, not allowing the baby to get into the birth canal. This whopper of a bull calf is about 110lbs and was ready to hatch!

We’ve got them home and EmmyLou is having a hard time accepting that he is hers. We hope after a few days of helping him nurse from her and spending time together, she will accept that he in fact came out of her!

Rule of thumb, always go with your gut feeling! I knew things weren’t right, even though EmmyLou never showed signed of stress or labor. Glad we didn’t wait!
