Our blind wine challenge this week featured Perl, a fresh white wine from Slovenia made primarily from Furmint and Pinot Blanc. Many tasters picked up on the bright citrus, orchard fruit, and crisp acidity, but the wine’s unusual origin and grape blend kept everyone guessing.

Sadly, nobody correctly identified the wine this week, so the bottle lives to challenge another group of tasters. Join us next Wednesday and see if you can crack the mystery.

Yesterday’s blind wine was this beautiful Menetou-Salon from Domaine Lucien Raimbault, “Les Chamblins” — a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc with bright citrus, minerality, and that classic flinty freshness that keeps people guessing.
We had one winner who correctly identified the wine, along with three others who correctly guessed the varietal. Not bad at all for a region that is often hidden in the shadow of Sancerre.

Swim season begins in one week.

That means poolside wines are officially back.

We’ve been stocking up on crisp light bodied whites, refreshing rosés, chilled sparkling wines, and easy summer bottles meant for long afternoons in the sun. Our house sparkling and house rosé are both back in heavy rotation, and we’ve even found a few genuinely good quality boxed wines that are perfect for the pool, beach, park, or rooftop… complete with built in coolers to keep everything cold.

Summer drinking should feel relaxed, delicious, and a little celebratory.

This week’s mystery wine was Trollinger from Germany.

Light bodied, bright, and full of fresh red fruit, Trollinger is a grape rarely seen outside of Germany and was a tough one for this week’s blind tasting challenge. Sadly, no winners this time, but that just means the bottle survives another day.

Chianti gets dismissed too easily.

People remember the straw baskets, the cheap bottles, or Hannibal Lecter. But good Chianti deserves better than its old reputation. Bright cherry fruit, herbs, savory earth, and the kind of acidity that makes food come alive.

This chapter from The Storyteller and the Sage is about giving Chianti another chance.
