Colin and Genine have farmed together for about 30 years, and these days their 60 acres at Kirsop Farm in Rochester are protected for good — they're farmland preservation partners, meaning the land can never be sold out from under them.

Kirsop Farm is known for a lot more than vegetables, though the carrots and kale get plenty of praise. Colin mills his own grain into flour and rolled oats. Their pastured chickens are processed right on the farm into meat, broth, and stock. Genine grows marigolds for garlands and blooms, and there's a flock of sheep too, raised for meat, wool, and tallow.

Most of their business happens at two year-round Seattle farmers markets, where they're also part of Growing for Good, a program that turns everyday shopper donations into food for local food banks. Working with the Food Hub let them shift toward growing more of fewer crops for your box, instead of trying to grow a little of everything.

If you've been loving your Harvest Box all summer and are wondering whether that ends when the season does — good news, it doesn't. Fall boxes are built the same way: 15 boxes for $39/box, picked up every Thursday, packed with produce from dozens of Southwest Washington farms.

The lineup shifts with the season with more roots, squash, and greens as we move into fall, but the model stays exactly as simple as it's always been.

This land in the Puyallup Valley has been growing things for generations — pumpkins, flower bulbs, Christmas trees, even cattle. Now it's over 30 acres of certified organic produce, thanks to Amy and Agustín, who've farmed together since 2005.

They moved to Pierce County right around when their son Gabriel was born, and these days the whole family's part of the actin. Hector loves the machinery, and Gabriel's already talking about running the place someday. When the land came up for sale, Washington Farmland Trust and Pierce County stepped in to make sure it stays farmland for good.

Right now, Four Elements Farm is one of the farms filling out your Harvest Box with produce like chard, kale, beets, and their sweet Cherry Sungold tomatoes among them.

One Harvest Box, dozens of farms.

When you sign up for a Harvest Box, you're not buying from one farm — you're plugging into a whole network of Southwest Washington growers, all coordinated into a single Thursday pickup. That's the point of a cooperative food hub: no single farm has to carry the whole season alone, and no single household has to track down a dozen different farm stands to eat well.

Katherine Humphrey grew up on a farm and started her own back in 2002 — and she's part of what's bringing hazelnuts back to Southwest Washington after decades without a commercial crop here. She lets the nuts ripen and drop naturally instead of shaking them loose, and over the years she's adapted her trees to handle our wetter falls so harvest wraps up before the rain moves in.

Summer's winding down, but your Harvest Box doesn't have to.

We hope you've been soaking up everything great about a Washington summer — tender lettuces, sweet berries, fresh herbs, and all the rest. The last Summer Harvest Box goes out September 24th, and right behind it comes a whole new lineup built for the season ahead: root vegetables, sweet corn, onions, peppers, kale, and apples — the hearty, keep-you-full kind of produce that carries a household right into winter.

Summer subscriptions don't roll over automatically — if you want your Thursday boxes to keep coming, you'll need to sign up for the Fall Harvest Box. The first Fall box drops October 1st, so there's no gap between seasons if you sign up now.
