Favaaaaaaaaaas!

We are having a **great** fava season. The plants are loaded, the beans are a beautiful size, and the flavor is excellent.

Favas are one of our favorite hyper-seasonal crops. They take a little time to prepare, but they are absolutely worth it.

My Friday evening plans? An hour or two of podcasting while pod-casting. 🎙️ 🫛

Current podcast obsession: *The Bechdel Cast*. Current fava obsession: stopping by the patch to snack on a few every time I walk past.

They are always delicious, but seconds after harvest? Truly next level. That is peak freshness.

If you don’t work on an organic vegetable farm with a handy dandy fava patch: One of the easiest ways to enjoy them throughout the week is to make **marinated favas**.

Shell the beans, briefly boil them, slip off the outer skins, then toss them with good olive oil, garlic, herbs, lemon zest, red pepper flakes, fennel seed, salt, or whatever sounds good. You can also add other spring vegetables like asparagus or edamame — just cook them until just tender first.

Then use them all week on pasta, salads, toast, eggs, fish, chicken, or anything that needs a little bright, springy flavor. The leftover oil is delicious as a salad dressing or drizzle, too.

Fava season is short, and this year’s crop is especially good. We’re enjoying every bit of it.

Adam didn’t like the waterwheel options out there.

Too bulky. Too long. Too much tank for our small tractor.

So he bought some Super Wheels, grabbed some wood, and built his own prototype.

We MacGyvered the tank and plumbing from parts we already had.

And voilà: a custom waterwheel transplanter.

So impressive, this guy

My sister and her crew visited us all the way from Nebraska last week.

2 vans. 10 kids. 20 hours of driving.

They arrived just in time for a few 90 degree days, followed by a few muddy ones. Pretty classic farm visit.

We had bonfires, made homemade bows and arrows from the arrowwood viburnum and chicken feathers, explored Baltimore and DC, and even got a few hours of shoveling, greens washing, and plant watering out of them.

The clearest sign they were here though? About 1,000 shoes in the entryway and perpetual laundry and dishes. I don’t know how my sister does it 😳

Now the house feels awfully quiet. (Which the cats appreciate. They made themselves scarce during the visit- we didn’t see Oliver for 3 days straight lol)

This time of year on the farm can feel like one long sprint, so having family here — even loud, chaotic family — was really good for the soul.

My brother visited the farm from Nebraska this past weekend and sent me this message this morning lol.

I don’t blame him! They’re good eggs. Dare I say great!

I’m so thankful I haven’t had to do the grocery store eggs since I’ve started farming. You really can’t beat a good full-flavored FRESH egg with that bright sunshiney yolk.

Good eggs from good chickens!

You can get our eggs through our CSA, at the Hereford Farmers Market on Saturdays, or through Chesapeake Farm to Table.
