🌿 Sunday Story Time: A Little More About Bad Luck Homestead! 🌿
Last Sunday, we brought you a little insight into how our name came about. Well, since I’m yet again sitting out in nature waiting for the deer to come around, I figured I might as well do another “About Us” post! 😂🦌
This week, we’re talking about something that has been part of Bad Luck Homestead since before Bad Luck Homestead was even a thing… our handcrafted body products!
If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you know all about these. From our cold process soaps to our shower frosting (which is NOT edible, despite how delicious it may look 🤣), these products are where it all started.
So, how did I get into making body products?
It all started over 9 years ago when the kids were little. Emma struggled with eczema, and everywhere I turned, I was being told to try fragrance-free products, sensitive skin formulas, products without artificial colors… the list went on and on.
Like many of you who have dealt with sensitive skin, I felt like nothing was really working. Some products seemed to help temporarily, but I wanted to find something that worked better for our family.
That’s when I started researching how to make my own body products.
And down the rabbit hole I went! 🐇
🧼 Cold Process Soap
The very first thing I stumbled upon was cold process soap.
Cold process soap is made using lye and oils. If you’ve ever heard your grandparents talk about making lye soap, this is the same basic process!
Thankfully, we have some pretty handy advancements these days, including soap calculators that help us formulate recipes with the proper balance of lye and oils.
The recipe I developed all those years ago is pretty much the same one I still use today. There have been a few tweaks here and there, but why mess with something that works?
🧈 Whipped Body Butter
The next product I started making was body butter. I wanted something that would moisturize our skin without a mile-long ingredient list or that heavy, greasy feeling.
Our body butter contains just FOUR butters and oils: shea butter, mango butter, apricot oil, and sunflower oil.
That's it!
These ingredients work together to create a rich, moisturizing body butter that melts into your skin and leaves it feeling soft and hydrated.
And yes, you can use it on your face, too! Just keep in mind that everyone's skin is different, especially if you're prone to clogged pores or breakouts.
🫧 Moisturizing Sugar Scrubs
Now, this one has a funny story behind it.
Most of us have probably tried one of those DIY sugar scrubs where you mix sugar and oil together. Sounds simple enough, right?
Well, when I tried it, I about fell on my butt in the shower! 🤣
Come to find out, oil and water don't mix. Who knew?!
After a little more research, I discovered emulsified sugar scrubs.
Unlike your typical oil-and-sugar scrub, our emulsified scrubs transform into a creamy, lotion-like consistency when mixed with water.
You get the exfoliation of a sugar scrub AND the moisturizing benefits without leaving behind that heavy, slippery layer of oil.
Your skin feels amazing, and your shower floor is a whole lot less slick. I'd call that a win!
🧁 Shower Frosting
This is the one that ALWAYS turns heads!
First things first… no, you cannot eat it. I promise, I get asked this more often than you would think! 😂
Shower frosting is basically a sugar scrub and soap all rolled into one fluffy, creamy product.
As you massage it onto wet skin, the sugar begins to dissolve while the soap creates a rich, creamy lather. It cleanses, gently exfoliates, and leaves your skin feeling soft.
And here's a little bonus… it also makes a fantastic shaving cream!
🧴 Our Handcrafted Lotion
Last, but certainly not least, is one of our BEST SELLERS!
Our lotion is thick, rich, and moisturizing without leaving you feeling like you just dipped yourself in a vat of grease. 😂
Made with mango butter, apricot oil, and sunflower oil, it glides on smoothly, absorbs quickly, and leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated.
It's a customer favorite and one of those products that keeps people coming back for more!

Here's something I really want people to understand about our handcrafted body products.
I have been making these products for OVER NINE YEARS!
Nine years! Where in the world has the time gone?!
Every single product is made by ME, in small batches.
I don't purchase premade soap, lotion, or scrub bases, add a little fragrance, slap a label on them, and call them handmade.
I research my ingredients, develop my recipes, formulate my products, and make them from scratch.
There have been plenty of experiments over the years. Some were successful, and some… well, let's just say they were learning experiences. 🤣
But every product we offer has been developed with a purpose, and I take pride in knowing exactly what goes into the products I make.
What started as a mom trying to find something better for her family has grown into a business that allows me to share these products with all of you.
And that is something I never could have imagined nine years ago.
From a few bars of soap in my kitchen to everything Bad Luck Homestead has become today, it's pretty incredible to look back and see how far we've come.
And the best part? We're not done growing yet!
