From our friends in Kenya…

This flooded plot is normally plowed during the initial preparation, as well as during w**ding. This has been done for the last 13 years. Yet it still produces more than the national average in terms of the yield per acre (after extrapolation) whichever crop we grow.

The mulched one in the background has been under minimal tillage for the same amount of time. It is w**ded instead by uprooting rather than by digging and kept under mulch cover 365 days a year. Even with the current rains, the mulched plot does not show any signs of water saturation. And it has gained a height difference of almost 30cm during the 13 years.

By comparison, the mulched plot always produces more, sometimes 2 or even 3 times as much. There are lessons to learn here. Plowing brings about negative impacts:
- increased runoff.
- increased erosion.
- compaction (crusting, slumping, and hard-pans).
- soil structure disruption.
- increased evaporation.
- poor infiltration.
- hotter soils by day and colder soils by night.
- reduced water holding capacity.
- reduced fertility.
- more w**d problems.
- poor aeration.
- generally higher costs.
- less yields.
- soil microbiology loss.

Farmers ought to learn how to be better stewards of God's creation. Sometimes it isn't so much about the rain - whether it is too much or too little. It could be that we are not stewarding God's resources well enough. Get in touch with us to learn more.
