Fun walk behind the creek the other day! I found blooming hawthornes and nanny berries, some neat sedges, water or purple avens which I thought looked like prairie smoke and turns out to be in the same genus, I think an iris but still waiting for it to flower so I can ID it, various willow shrubs which continue to be very hard to ID but fun to watch them change though the seasons and a caterpillar enjoying red osier dogwood

We planted so many things yesterday, our first (hopefully) day after the last frost! Here the guys are planting the eggplants and field hot peppers. We also planted our big main season flower patch, pyo hot peppers, chamomile, Mexican tarragon, and basil! Plus I seeded arugula, radishes, baby bok choi, broccoli raab, and edamame. Now it’s all getting a nice rain in 😊

So fun to watch the native plants over a few years…I just planted prairie smoke next to the only one that germinated last year that is now flowering. A year wait for the show. I’m excited to see the smoke plume like pods that are coming.
Next picture is fireweed planted a few years ago. CSA member Alison said she grew up with fireweed in Alaska and was excited to plant it a few years ago when we offered it. Hers looked sad that first year, put up more shoots the next year but didn’t do much and then this year is putting up a lot of healthy shoots and looks about to pop. That’s how ours is too! Apparently it will eventually take over if we let it but we have it in a bed by our house so we’re going to keep it contained there. I’m excited to see the blooms whoever they come! Alison says they make jelly out of it so that will be interesting to try once we have a good patch.
