If you’ve been following this page for any length of time, you probably know without a shadow of a doubt that red is my favorite color in Rex, and the one I definitely hoard the most of. These guys have my heart, and I wish more loved them the way I do.
I remembered to check the Rex sweepstakes rankings the other day as I was curious. I didn’t really show all that much this past year, and still ended up being 11th in the open rankings for reds. Which, cool, that’s awesome, right? Sure, until you realize that there’s only 16 people on that list for open (and 8 in youth). I’m not complaining about my ranking being so low in comparison, no, it makes total sense. I showed reds at 5 (sanctioned) shows total, and never really had any competition at any of them (red or otherwise, except for PaSRBA). 16 NRRC members across the US, showing reds in Rex-sanctioned shows. That seems wild to me (and that’s not to discount the other rare varieties, trust me, I know they’re out there. Ironically enough, most of those rarer varieties have a decent showing in areas around me). Of course that’s not counting those not in the National Rex Rabbit Club, or those who showed their reds at shows that didn’t have a Rex sanction (which is becoming increasingly more common at local shows). But I don’t imagine that there’s a ton more red breeders out there who show at all. Certainly not many nearby that have them.
I’m rambling. I guess the point I’m getting at is, if you like the look of red Rex as much as I do and are semi local… get in touch with me at some point and I’ll see what we can get accomplished in getting you set up with some nice reds. It won’t be right away, but it’s definitely something we can work on. I would absolutely LOVE for more folks to get them on the show tables around here. And by around here, I do mean surrounding states - WV, OH, VA, PA, MD… we have to travel quite a bit for most shows anyways. Heck, more Rex in general on the show tables would be splendid too. If you aren’t familiar with the show world but would like to give it a shot, I can walk you through that too.
I do have to warn you, reds can be one of the more challenging varieties, along with tricolor, shaded, etc. Since they’re not as commonly worked on, it can be more difficult to find the type pieces you need without outcrossing to other colors (which I commonly utilize), and the color isn’t the easiest to get correct… but those are things that I have been diligently working on, and at this point I am extremely proud of the reds I am producing. To me type is more important than color when selecting keepers, but to get both in one animal is always a welcome surprise. Even though they can be more challenging, they are so worth it. Seeing a nice red Rex nearly glow in the sun is just *chef’s kiss*. Not quite as spectacular as a red Satin in sunlight, but close.
And if you’re not semi-local and still like what you see here… I will happily work with most transports if they’re coming near me. I can give a couple recommendations that I have used and really like, but happy to consider others.
All the reds (and the broken red) pictured are stock that was born here. Keep in mind broken reds will show in the broken class with all other broken patterned Rex, and do not count towards red totals. The juniors will be on my show string this fall, while the seniors will be making more reds for me this fall. I have a ton more who carry the genes needed to make red, but these are all the visual reds sticking around in the rabbitry.
