Many thanks to the AmeriRent Equipment for the skidsteer rental for the weekend! It was clutch! And of course to all the workers and their many chainsaws that helped!

Does anyone else have tips for chopping up trees covered in poison ivy? I’m covered! 😥

Farmer Liz learns not to pick fights with boulders 😂🤣

In all seriousness, I ran over a large decorative boulder I couldn’t see due to high grass see with our borrowed tractor and I’m just thankful that the tractor, I, and I think the mower are all going to be OK.

Good news: We got the farm 1/2 mowed down.
Bad news: I broke our only remaining large scale Rotary mower 😬

We have some equipment fixin’ ahead of us now… The other Bush hog mower is also broken and has been for a couple months now. We are waiting on a new gear box to arrive before it can be fixed.

We’re excited to share a new addition to the farm!

Please welcome our 1950’s International Harvester Dump Truck!

Mike has been looking for this truck for years and he finally found it. We’re so grateful to the farming couple in Michigan who wanted to see their truck go to another farm. 🙏🏽

Uncle Scott drove up with Mike to help transport it back to our farm as it still needs a bit of work before it is road-ready. Thank you, Scott Reeder !

Mowing down the farm 🚜

After many months of not mowing, we’re finally getting back to it!

I know it’s been a bit quiet on the home-front here lately. We have been busy but, frankly I’ve been too overwhelmed to post anything. In short summary—this year has been a doozy of equipment breakdowns.

Since we finished planting season this past Spring, we had just about every mower and tractor that we own or borrow break, with our borrowed tractor spending 2.5 months in the shop and having to get the fuel injector rebuilt. One of the neighboring properties next to the farm actually heard Mike break the bush hog or pull behind mower-there was an an audible “bang” sound so loud they came out to see if he was ok and thankfully he was. There’s more in the list of broken equipment, but those are a couple highlights…

I guess we are learning what it means to be farmers 😎

We’re thankful to back out in the fields and getting back to business.

👋 Hello from the St Nicholas Tree Farm

We’re still out here, still working the land ☀️

It’s been a bit quiet on the homefront for a few months so I wanted to say Good Morning from the farm!

Due to the increased workload of planting season rolling into a mowing season that has lasted from Springtime through September this year—and all the equipment issues that came with with it—I got behind on posting and then stopped posting completely for awhile.

I will share more about what we’ve been up to for the past few months, but for now I wanted to let y’all know we’re still here and chugging along. In the words of one of my former bosses, the Superintendent of a construction project:

💥Surprise — today is clean up day!

We came to the farm this morning planning to continue planting our seedlings and found that one of our mature white pine trees was hit by the storm last night. One of it’s branches fell directly onto one of the nearby seedling fields.

Instead of planting today, we’ll be cleaning up this fallen limb and checking on the baby trees underneath.

Thank goodness for my Mom & Jeff leading the clean up crew! They’re working their butts off, folks!

Sometimes we have plans and nature has other plans. 🌲

We’re getting closer to being done with planting season: 900 seedlings to go.

Another family planting day 🩷

The kids were in full support mode at the farm for a few hours today. Sometimes they can be a handful and we’re not as productive as we’d like to be with the farm work, but we get to be productive in a different way. We’re thankful to be able to spend time with them and make these memories.

We have 1,100 trees in the ground so far (out of 3,000) and chugging along. This is our Fraser & Concolor fir field, which we finished planting last night. This field was specially chosen for for it’s location on the north-facing slope of a hill. These trees love good drainage and cooler temperatures than we average here in Marion. We are testing this location and hoping that it’s a good fit.

Hills are a good workout. I’m getting tired! 😃

Big thanks to my mom for these hats (and so so so much more)!!! They’re amazing and block the sun while allowing our heads to breathe, which is a feat. Sun protection is important for me because I am a melanoma skin cancer survivor. So in case you haven’t heard it lately—wear your sunscreen and stay covered from 10am-2pm☀️

Getting behind in my posting as we get further along into planting season but I’ll keep catching up as I have the time.
