Ground beef was introduced to Americans in the mid 1800’s.

First came the hamburger steak, and Salisbury steak.

But in 1904, at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, came the first idea of using ground beef “on the go” as it was sold as a patty between two slices of bread. The world changed as Americans embraced the idea of consuming beef both as a plated meal, but also ground as a way for a quick meal “on the go.”

American infatuation grew rapidly. In 1921, the hamburger was officially recognized as the name of the sandwich which consisted of ground beef made into a patty, and consumed with bread.

Widespread use of ground beef in meals continued to grow. In 1971, Hamburger Helper hit store shelves, again revolutionizing the thoughts behind food prep and time involved with feeding a family. Fast food eating establishments continued to grow in vast numbers, and the family budget grew to include dedicated dollars for eating out.

In 2026 ground beef stands at the top of the list of preferred purchases made by American consumers. Ground beef, alone stands for nearly 50% of the beef purchased by a family in a calendar year. Consumers cite value AND ease of use for reasoning in choosing ground beef above other cuts.

One pound of ground beef contains approximately 1,200 calories and 65 grams of protein.
Throw in a wee bit of fiber and healthy carbohydrates, and you can satisfy one human’s daily requirement for nutrients.

I guess it’s easy to see why ground beef is a favorite subject for Americans, and why discussion of it, the health, the price, and who benefits from the sale of it, brings out a lot of passion, opinions, and politics.

I know this industry is in an uproar right now. But beef is still one of the best natural proteins you can put in your body!!!!!!!!!!
If you’re still going to buy from the store, please buy American! This stuff they’re proposing to ship in is gonna be pure crap! You won’t wanna know what you’re buying! But if you’re after the $ savings, go for it.
But the BEST thing you could do is buy LOCAL. I do not care who’s it is from! Butcher beef is simply way better in so many ways! And if you compare pound vs pound to the store, it’s actually cheaper in most cases. It’s just, you have to pay all of it up front. Let alone the convenience if reaching in the freezer and pulling out supper for the family!
Again, I do not care which Local producer you get from. Find someone who you like, trust and believe in what/how they raise their cattle and build a relationship that can last a lifetime! I got sooo many customers that I’ve never met face to face but we feel like we’re friends! If you believe in grass fed - find that producer. If believe in corn fed - find that producer. 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️
In our local area, we all know each other. We’re all the same frame of mind. We all love our animals and do extra things that it takes for our animals. We all treat them better than what do our own bodies!!!! It’s our passion. It’s in our DNA. We certainly don’t do this to get rich, that is for DAM sure!!!!! We hope it’s rich in all the other ways, but not $. I think it’s a form of a disease that we can’t cure!
Unlike our politicians, none us will bad mouth each other or back stab. We’re all trying to accomplish the same thing cause we all believe in what we do
Along with that local producer, make sure that you also like & believe in the Locker they use. Lockers make a HUGE difference in your meat being a good vs bad experience! I learned a long time ago (the hard way of course) that you can bring in a perfect animal and if the Locker doesn’t do their job correctly, it can be a bad experience!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! That’s how relationships get built. My motto is “ an informed customer is normally a happy customer “ and I truly believe that!
