Happy Strawberry Sunday!
Can you believe these berries are from plants that we planted in May?! Normally strawberry season is about a month long in June but we picked these yesterday and there are still a ton more coming! We didn't think we'd have a crop like this until next year so we're extra grateful. We shared some with our flock and will be turning the rest into jam.
Cheers to homegrown food.

⭐Our stand is open today from 10-6 and normally closed Mondays-Wednesdays. (Sometimes we open on Wednesdays to sell overstock from the Farmers Market. )
⭐We will be at this Tuesday's Deforest Farmer's Market from 3:30-6:30.

Day 3️⃣ of our reimagined coop run.

Travis and I dug holes, poured concrete and placed the canopy frame in position to be bolted down. I had to leave to run errands and had told Travis that I wish we had thought ahead to make a special spot for concrete-impressions (like handprints.) When I returned home he surprised me with a chicken footprint and I just about teared up. He was so thoughtful and the impression is stinkin' cute! Thanks, my love!

Day 1 and 2 of our reimagined coop run.

Day 1️⃣ Travis cleared away all of the old materials and removed dead plum tree. Then he used his emotional support tractor to muck out and smoothed the 💩 ground.

Day 2️⃣ Travis and Cha Cha started building the canopy. I was busy making salsa but popped over to lend a hand as needed.

Our flock is growing!
We now have 73 members in our chicken family and they need more room. Over the last year we've hatched chicks of our own and then purchased a few from our favorite hatchery McMurray Hatchery That's Esmerelda in the photo. She and her siblings were born on June 1st and have fully integrated with the rest of our flock. She's 100% a momma's girl.

For the next week we will be in full coop-reconstruction-mode so we will not be at this Tuesday's Farmer's Market in Deforest.

Our coop plans include the following:
1️⃣A completely reimagined outdoor run. It'll be bigger to accommodate our 73 chickens and 9 geese, be partially covered with a metal canopy for inclement weather, and have extra enrichment/boredom busters for our chickens. (When chickens get bored they make poor choices.) Our flock does have free range of our property but when we're not home they stay in their run for protection from predators.
2️⃣General coop repairs for the doors, roof, roosts and storage areas.

We will be busy bees but we don't mind at all. Our chickens and geese may be livestock but they are part of our family. They deserve to live in a safe and happy home.

1️⃣Our most asked question at markets: Is your bread sourdough?
Answer: No, it is not. It's simple yeast bread. We use 1g of yeast per loaf which is about 1/3 of a teaspoon. Such an itty bitty amount for such scrumptious bread.

2️⃣Our second most asked question: What is rustic bread?
Answer: It is fresh bread made in a cast iron Dutch Oven. Each loaf is 100% perfectly imperfect and 100% delicious.

We make yeast bread and we're not ashamed.
We're proud and we're grateful.
