🍷 A few facts about Super Tuscans… because w**e history is always interesting and fun.
• “Super Tuscan” is not an official Italian w**e classification. It began as a nickname for Tuscan w**emakers who were willing to break the established rules.
• Some of the original Super Tuscans were actually labeled Vino da Tavola — table w**e — because their blends didn’t conform to the regulations of the day.
• There is no required Super Tuscan blend. They may include Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot or combinations of those varieties.
• A Super Tuscan doesn’t even have to contain Sangiovese.
• French oak is common, but there is no required barrel program that makes a w**e a Super Tuscan.
• The movement was really about making the best w**e possible rather than letting traditional rules dictate the blend.
• And technically, a true Super Tuscan comes from Tuscany. W**es produced elsewhere — including California — are more accurately described as Super Tuscan-style or Super Tuscan-inspired.
