Thanksgiving tradition.....seeding carrots and spinach which will overwinter as a semi dormant seed the ground. We'll cover these two beds when we get back from vacation in early December. The seeds will likely germinate in late February and will be the first new crops from outdoors next spring- 2023!!

Salad greens and spinach galore, sweet carrots, several varieties of radishes, numerous herbs, Gala and Fuji apples, winter squash, onions and garlic, and of course sweet potatoes and regular Irish potatoes as well.....I mean what's a Thanksgiving meal without those?!?!

RiverRidge Farm's iron cow in action!!! 6 to 7 foot tall sweet corn stalks are no match for our BCS flailmower!
Cover crops, green manure, growing your own compost- terms used to describe a natural, sustainable method of building a healthy soil! Here's a few shots of how we use this at RiverRidge Farm. The first one shows a beautiful bed of kohlrabi growing in the shadow of strips of cereal rye and hairy vetch. We will flail mow and then till/incorporate these strips in early June and then transplant right into the naturally nourished soil! The second picture is an early crop of buckwheat. It is a quick growing crop that is ready to plow under in about 4 weeks. We use it in beds that are open but will be planted soon. It is also a great forage crop for our honeybees if we let it flower. The last picture shows our soil after incorporating a bed of rye and vetch- very loamy and rich! A natural, long term method of soil fertility!
