Some days don't go quite as planned, and tonight didn't end off in a fun manner.
I didn't remember that a hen had chicks hatching today, but I was reminded of that when I found fire ants all up in the nest.
One chick had already succumbed to the ants in the egg.
I was able to get the other 2 out of the eggs and away from the ants and moved the mother into a higher, ant-free nest with the chicks put under her, until I was finished with the nightly chores.
Unfortunately that was a mistake. In the rush she killed one of the chicks by stepping on it. The poor thing already had a swollen head from ant bites, the outcome of that one was already questionable. But unfortunate nonetheless.
I brought the last of the 3 inside and popped it in the incubator that has quail hatching in it. The chick has some dead(?) fire ants still attached to it, but it needs to rest, I will do a closer look on the chick tomorrow.
I'll try to keep everyone updated!
