Last Thursday, Wells Village School 3rd- and 4th-grade students became soil investigators using their empirical skills.

Inside the high tunnel, they searched for and observed the tiny workers that keep soil healthy — beetles, worms, and other decomposers. They tallied what they found in their own handwriting to create a data record.

Together through classroom, community, and cafeteria connections, we've talked about the “Soil FBI” — fungi, bacteria, and invertebrates — and how these living organisms break down organic matter, keep our environment 'tidy', and help grow the food we eat.

Learning about soil life isn’t just reading about it in a book.
It’s kneeling down, looking closely, and noticing who is already at work beneath our feet. Experiential learning is abundant, relevant, and valuable for our youth.

Thanks to the Leahy USDA Farm to School grant awarded to Vermont Farm and Forest School, these students, their amazing teachers, and I have been able to explore and develop science studies together in our community.

Our small farm can only feed a small number of families each year.

Most families who enjoy lamb from our farm each year simply make sure to reserve theirs before the season fills.

Why families reserve their lamb each year:

“We reserve our lamb every year because we trust the way this farm raises food.”

When we started farming this land six years ago, it struggled.

The soil was thin.

Rainwater ran off instead of soaking in.

During dry spells, the pasture turned brittle and brown.

Years of compaction had slowed the soil’s natural systems.

So we began healing it the way grasslands evolved to heal—
with grazing animals carefully moved across the land.

Today the change is visible.

Pasture plants grow shoulder-high to the cows.
Water soaks deep into the soil.
Pollinators and birds find habitat throughout the season.

And every chicken, cow, and lamb we raise continues this work.

How’re things you ask?

Here, like having 19 newborns… or maybe a little less — like triplets. Four daily bottles for Mike, Matt, and Vernon.

Feeding the sheep in the barn, filling water, and adding fresh bedding. Reminds me why I’m a grazer…they get their own supper!

Noticing the sun — warmer, brighter, stretching the days longer.

Even from inside the barn, you can feel it: Spring is on the way.

Rushing out the door promising tomorrow will be calmer?

Lambing season reminds me life doesn’t move faster because we push it. It unfolds when it’s ready.

Right now on the farm, new lambs arrive on their own timeline.

There are midnight barn checks, tired mornings, and a surprising calm that comes from learning when to step in—and when to trust.

Baby lamb photos and a behind-the-scenes look at this season on the blog.

It’s a reminder everythings as it should be.

Step into the lamb barn with me on my blog.

This weekend, let go of feeling stuck in the kitchen.

Imagine joyfully tossing flavorsome staples, like our grass-fed Normande beef in the Insta-Pot because you know -

By the time you change and shower,
this hot, healthy, and happiness-making stew is ready to eat.

Cooking with our farm-raised beef has made that easier in my own kitchen, and I enjoy sharing those recipes with you.
