We love letting our garden in front of the house grow a little wild. This is our cheery yellow corner with big lush goldenrod, brown eyed Susan, evening primrose, kale, and a little lanceleaf coreopsis hiding in there. You can never have too many yellow flowers! The pollinators love it too. We also let mint go wild around the doorway so every time you walk through the threshold you get a little aromatherapy 😌

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)

Partridge pea, the only annual we sell because it's a beautiful, native, self-seeding nitrogen fixer!

Baby monarch caterpillars are here! πŸ₯Ή I may have been stalking them this morning... We've been seeing the monarch butterflies visiting the nursery, and the caterpillars only take 3-5 days to hatch. Here they are munching on Common Milkw**d. We're honored to host these cuties via the various Asclepias species we have here on the farm. At the moment we have Common milkw**d and butterfly w**d (asclepias tuberosa) available for sale.

This is why we don't use pesticides on our native plants. πŸ›πŸ¦‹πŸ’œ Instead, we try to maintain plenty of habitat and forage for beneficial insects, to keep populations in balance, and we manually remove non-native pest insects.

We'll be open by appointment only for the month of July! You can make an appointment to shop in person by sending us an email, reaching out through our website, sending us a message on here, whatever works! You can also still order online and then set up a time to pick up the order from the farm. We'll resume our regular Sat/Sun retail hours in August for the rest of the season.

Hairy beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus) -- this plant is such a sensory delight. I love seeing the shades of purpley pink blooms, touching the fuzzy soft stems, and watching the bees crawl into the tubular flowers to forage for nectar. Can grow in shade to full sun, and it's drought tolerant 🌱.

We're very excited to be part of the new Maine Native Plants Cooperative! For those who aren't familiar with us, Radical Roots Nursery is a latinx-owned native plant and fruit tree nursery based in Winterport (Wabanaki territory). Our top priorities are ecosystem friendly growing practices, healthy plants, helping folks find species they didn't know they love, and promoting food sovereignty and biodiversity. We grow perennials, shrubs, and trees in sizes ranging from 1-gal to 3-gal containers, and we grow our woody plants in air-pruning fabric bags that produce healthier roots. Scroll for pictures of the team: Sam, Garrett, and our farm dog Sofia.

Our nursery is open Saturdays and Sundays 9-5 or by appt. in winterport during the growing season. You can also order online on our website (radicalrootsnursery.com) for pick-up at the farm 🌱 our other services include: consulting, grafting workshops, landscape installations, and fruit tree pruning 🌳

Apple blossoms are poppin right now! We have just a handful of our biggest heirloom apple trees, and a whole new crop of smaller apple trees in 40 different varieties. We went wild with grafting our favorite varieties that year, so we ended up with more varieties, but just a few of each in some cases. One we're really excited about is the Colorado Orange apple tree, a super rare apple from our home state that was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 2019.

We're open Sat/Sun 9-5 during the growing season, but we'll be closed this Sat the 30th, as we'll at the Native Gardens of Blue Hill native plant sale!! Still taking pre-orders for that via email and our website.
