GREYWACKE

GREYWACKE Greywacke is the Marlborough wine label of the Judd family & the name of New Zealand's most abundant bedrock. Private tastings welcome by prior arrangement.

Established in 2009, Greywacke's minimal-intervention winemaking celebrates season and place, producing wines with personality & individuality. Established in 2009 by the Judd family, Greywacke is a quality focused family winery in the heart of Marlborough's Omaka Valley. Whilst the company now exports its wines all over the world, the ethos remains to ‘keep it simple and hands-on’ with a small, d

edicated team running the company from Greywacke HQ. The Greywacke range is primarily based on two varieties, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir; the sauvignon being produced in two distinctly different styles. Limited releases of chardonnay, riesling and pinot gris complement the line-up. The fruit is sourced from mature vineyards in prime viticultural sites to optimise the potential afforded by Marlborough’s sunny South Pacific climate. Kevin Judd’s signature vineyard photographs provide the distinctive identity of the Greywacke labels.

With chilly Marlborough evenings on the increase, the Greywackers are reaching for wines with richness and complexity. Having now enjoyed 20 months in bottle, the 2023 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are becoming hard to resist.

Don't take our word for it though; check out these excerpts from Shanteh Wale's reviews in Halliday Wine Companion instead...

Greywacke Chardonnay 2023
"A powerful chardonnay, with every aspect singing in harmony. Flavours echo for long moments. A wine you’ll remember and wish you bought more of. 95 Points."

Greywacke Pinot Noir 2023
"Beautifully fragrant, this opens with fresh violets and just-picked cherries... well packaged as a whole, slinky, juicy and with just enough savoury turned-earth tones to anchor the oak spice. 95 Points."

We are delighted and honoured to have Greywacke Botrytis Pinot Gris named The Real Review 2026 - Sweet Wine of the Year – a moment in the spotlight for the smallest, intermittently produced and definitely the most luscious wine in the Greywacke portfolio.

When given the opportunity to fully ripen on the vine, pinot gris has a remarkably exotic and complex flavour profile. With the right conditions and the onset of botrytis, these flavours intensify further and we painstakingly press tiny volumes of juice to ferment something truly delicious.

Here's what Jane Skilton MW and The Real Review had to say about the Greywacke Botrytis Pinot Gris 2023...

"A deliciously flamboyant late-harvest pinot gris that is powerful and rich with layers of sweet biscuit complexity interwoven with ripe apricot, honeysuckle and mango fruit. While there is a good deal of honeyed sweetness there's also a savoury textural note that balances out the sweetness and brings poise and presence. 94 Points | The Real Review Sweet Wine of the Year"

Back in 2015, the team at Greywacke hosted Tawna Brown, a freelance travel writer and photographer from Yellowknife. She was in the middle of an ambitious year-long global journey and chose Marlborough as a stop to indulge her passions for both landscape photography and wine.

Tawna’s stories of life on the shores of Great Slave Lake, some 400 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, planted the seed for a future journey to Canada’s far north. A decade later, that idea came full circle when Kevin and Kimberley took the opportunity to visit Tawna Brown and her faithful hound, Hiccup, following Greywacke events in Edmonton.

Australian Wine Companion is a website, magazine and education platform established over 30 years ago by acclaimed wine writer James Halliday.

In recent years, Halliday Wine Companion has taken a keen interest in New Zealand wines - rightly so! - and have strengthened their Tasting Team to nine panelists to ensure robust coverage of both Australia and NZ. The platform has also announced a New Zealand winery rating system and we were delighted to be amongst its 'Five Black Stars' rating - the highest current rating available for NZ wineries.

Wine Companion's Marlborough reviewer, Shanteh Vale, is a breath of fresh air. Her descriptions are playful, emotive and enchanting... and encourage readers to try new wines and not take it too seriously.

Small but savvy was our vintage crew this year! Thank you for all the hard work, laughter and energy - (LtoR, cover image) Ben, Richelle, Jimi & Ollie

Ollie championed our Night Shift, bringing a staunch work ethic to the demands of midnight ferments.

His first vintage, Jimi impressed us with his determination, agility and good nature.

From the office, we roll out Ben every harvest as he’s a priceless source of dead-pan humour. An extra win, invoicing for Ben’s breakages appears to be on the decrease!

Richelle was crowned ‘Over-Flow Expert’ mid harvest, managing to overflow anything and everything - and sometimes all on the same day! Luckily, she’s got a knack for winemaking overall so we'll let it slide.

"Picking commenced slowly, but ramped up late March when sauvignon blanc started to come in,” says Richelle. "We were very lucky with weather this year. There was a rain event mid harvest but all fruit emerged unscathed! I’m predicting it’s the year of sauvignon blanc. The flavours on the vine and in the winery have been very alluring!”

Harvest 2026, that's a wrap!

The Real Review recently released their list of top-rated 2024 Marlborough sauvignon blancs. 137 expressions were celebrated, with Greywacke proudly sitting at numero uno. 😎

Master of Wine Jane Skilton declared Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2024 "aromatic and juicy" while including it in a Real Review Cellar Talk feature and awarding it a 5 Star and 96 Point rating. What an absolute honour!

"Kevin Judd and Richelle Tyney continue to produce one of Marlborough’s most distinctive and exciting sauvignon blancs. Powerfully aromatic, bursting with passionfruit, lemon blossom, pink grapefruit and guava. There’s a deliciousness to this wine; it has masses of succulent fruit, juicy, electric acidity and best of all, a long, savoury, dry finish." Jane Skilton MW, The Real Review

Last year, Kimberley quietly shared her 'birthday wish' of meeting nature and wildlife conservationist, Chris Packham. Little did she know that Kevin, with the help of a mutual friend, set out immediately to make it happen.

Kim is a fervent nature and animal lover and - over the course of a beautiful shared lunch at Limewood - the decision was made to provide Greywacke wine for Chris' debut wildlife photography exhibition 'More Beautiful Than You'.

You can witness the thought-provoking exhibition for yourself at London's Iconic Images Gallery.

"Breaking the familiar mould of the wildlife photographer as nature’s humble witness, Chris Packham does not simply watch and wait – he anticipates, researching his subjects and interacting with their environment in order to achieve compositions that had previously only existed in his mind. This shift from observation to orchestration is central to the unique, provocative power of Packham’s work. The images in 'More Beautiful Than You' are stunning, unsettling and uplifting; suffused with an ethical perspective that is impossible to ignore."

Welcome to the home of Greywacke - breathtaking Marlborough, New Zealand.
On the southern side of Marlborough's Wairau plains is a series of tributary valleys collectively known as the Southern Valleys. Greywacke HQ is nestled within its Omaka Valley.

With a north-south orientation, the Southern Valleys are separated by rolling hills and become progressively cooler with altitude and distance from the coast. These valleys comprise of older soils, typically layers of loess and clay-bound gravels that are said to have been deposited as outwash during the last glacial maxima about 20,000 years ago.

With an annual rainfall of around half that of the northern side of the Wairau, the Southern Valleys have proven to be a very suitable terroir for the cultivation of a cross-section of grape varieties. Today, pinot noir is emerging as a stand-out.

Thanks to Jesse and Joe of Fold In The Map for capturing a few of our favourite views and vineyards. Join us for a quick tour of the Omaka, Brancott and Ben Morven Valleys - including Greywacke Home Block, Kennedys Road, Falloon, Yarrum and The Nineteenth.

Still in its infancy, the Greywacke Pinot Noir 2023 has earned some lovely recognition of recent. We can't deny that 'high points' are encouraging, but it's the words that have always resonated with us!

"Very self-assured, beautifully poised and with a winning combination of energy, vitality and grace, it’s a show-stopping wine... 98 Points"
Susie Barrie MW & Peter Richards MW www.susieandpeter.com

"Fabulous bouquet with complexity and depth, purity of fruit and a sense of site, winemaking style and intrigue... 95 Points" Cameron Douglas MS, Camdouglasms.com

"Savoury balances ripeness and tension, juxtaposing sunny, bright Marlborough fruit against nervy acidity. Well-handled tannins coat the mouth in a gentle, sinewy manner... 90 Points" Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

"Power, structure, serious wine built for the future, the chewy tannins and bright acidity lending tautness." Mark Henderson, Otago Daily Times
