We had a new calf born yesterday morning and when I went to log the baby in the Herdbook — she looked a totally different color than the cow I'd entered in January.

Mom, Pop, Copilot and I genuinely debated if I'd lost my mind. Same tag. Same pasture. Different cow.

Turns out cows can change color. Hormones, season, weather — Copilot walked us through it. Multi-generational ranchers probably know this. Even my parents probably. I did not.

But this is why I built the Herdbook. Because we needed a system to easily figure out who belonged to who and how old they were so SV Bumboat would stop taking the wrong babies to the sale barn. I’m pretty proud of how helpful it’s turning out to be.

So whatever color she decides to be next season — white, gray, somewhere in between — we've got our eye on #127. And now on her new baby too.
