Fall planting. At this time of year all of the seeds that we will plant in the field will end their time in the cold weather of October and November. For that reason we have to plant crops pretty close together. A round of greens that is planted two days before might be ready to pick a full week earlier than one that is planted a couple days later. As the light fades and the temperatures drop, we need to adjust our planting schedules from once a week during the summer for most of our green crops, to once every couple days in this final week or two of planting. Hearing the late summer insect cacophony in the background is always my visceral signal to hurry up flip beds, get things done and get the last possible plantings in.
