Sound up for crunchy spring ice, and the rare and beautiful sound of red wing blackbird singing in the marshes on a skate. Lots of signs of spring, the coyotes patrolling the ice, and a lovely stop in a French bakery for a midday, coffee and pastry break in the town of Magog. We were tempted to strap some baguettes to our backpacks for the trip back. ice

This is a large plate of ice moving north on Lake Champlain a few weeks ago. This plate was 5 inches thick and was being propelled by a light south wind, probably about 7 miles an hour wind. The plate moved for somewhere over in a half an hour. We had anticipated this possibility on that day and we're in a safe position when it started to move. We estimated this plate to be approximately 7 miles long by 3 to 5 miles wide depending. A fairly impressive movement of ice. Large ice sheet movement is one of the many hazards of skating on large lakes. We are well prepared for these hazards wearing dry suits and having a solid understanding of the variables involved. One of our many safety procedures is the ability to swim the small leads like the one that you see in this video between the main Ice sheet and Shore if necessary.
