GOAT TRANSPORT OPPORTUNITY!

Would anyone be interested in transport along this route middle of November?
Maine —> Virginia —> Maine

Transport is cheap if you meet along route, we will have a trailer so can transport adult animals.

• Animals will be evaluated before and after getting on the trailer, we try to make sure everyone is healthy and happy and animals arrive in good condition ✨

• cvi's are required if crossing state lines 🐐

• can share location with you so you know exactly where your animal is during the trip! ✨

I spend a lot of this time of year evaluating my herd, wondering who will stay and who will go, what new animals will I bring in in the spring?

If you’ve been following for a bit you’ll know that I don’t come from an agricultural background. I definitely don’t have past experience showing any kind of animal! I didn’t even know showing goats was a thing until we got them! So I’ve really been through it, and am still going through it, with trying to get a proper herd going.

One of the things that has surprised me the most these few short years we’ve been learning, is just how much my preference in an animals style has changed. And what I’ve found out to be some of the biggest things I care about when deciding if I’m keeping an animal or not.

I spent a lot of money on animals in the beginning of showing goats that I never kept anything out of before I sold because the style of goat I liked changed 😅

I’m still trying to figure out what direction I’m going in some days, although I’m a lot closer to figuring it out now than I was!

Surprisingly, I’ve found that udder height and shape has become one of the biggest things I’ve become picky about. Maybe it’s because I post so many milking videos, so that’s what I see and other people see the most from my herd.

I’ve also learned that I don’t care about a HUGE doe or the biggest milker if she can’t keep body condition easily. I’m not making more money from a heavy producer that I have to dump alfalfa and grain into. I’m overjoyed by the shorter does who stay fat on air who milk just barely 3lbs of milk a day less. (DC and Alder, my GIRLS!)

I’ve also learned I have a really hard time getting caught up with big names. I do A LOT of pedigree searching, a sickening amount 😅
And sometimes I forget that just because it’s a big name, it doesn’t mean that animal will make me what I personally like to look at in my barn.

And isn’t that the most important part? Liking what is in your own barn? I know I’ll always be able to find flaws in my animals, and that’s good, that keeps us striving for better always! But I want to make sure that what I see in the barn makes me mostly happy. I have to remind myself not to chase ribbons, chase the beautiful high and round udders and nice wide flats rumps, because that’s what I like, and hopefully some day the ribbons will follow.

Here is your sign to remove any and all barbed wire fencing from your property! And also your sign to treat your dogs well so they trust you, because this could have been so much worse than it was…

This did not happen on my property, although we do have some barbed wire on our new property that I will promptly be removing.

I decided to take Artemis with us today since we were spending the day away from home, and because it was so beautiful out we spent most of the day outside walking around. For a split second my mind went “oh sh✨t, there’s barbed wire in the woods here” and as that thought hit my mind she was slung backwards by her stomach caught on some wire.

She was freaking out and trying to bite what was hurting her, which just made everything worse because she still had barbed wire across her midsection. I truly don’t remember the run to her, I saw her get stuck and then was right in there with her!

This is where all of my time spent with this dog was so important. Instead of going after me when I grabbed her, she stood still. I told her to stop and she stoped. My mom ran over and grabbed ahold of her front while I made sure nothing was stuck in her belly and I carefully got her legs in between the bottom and top pieces of wire while she calmly let me do everything. When I got her out, I told her to lay down and she laid down and let me carefully check her over.

I don’t know how she only got surface cuts, honestly I think I bled more than she did and I hardly got into anything, but she must have some tough ass skin.

I’ve been in some pretty hairy situations with dogs (no pun intended), but I’ve never felt a level of trust like this before with a dog.

So, if your property has barbed wire on it, remove it. And please train your dogs in a way that creates trust and not fear, because this truly could have been an emergency vet visit real fast.
