Y’all, we got one of the sweetest gifts the other day. Ava Clare’s Fancy Fluffy Chickens sent us some hatching eggs!

Words can’t express how thankful we are. They went in with 200 other silkie eggs for our last big hatch of the year. Sorry y’all, you won’t find these beautiful little chicks in the $5 brooder. Wish us luck!

The good Lord saw it fit to give a shot with some nice eggs so we took the chance. Loaded up 169 silkie eggs tonight, and about 75 marans/olive egger eggs last night. Our silkies seem to always hatch a day before our large fowl so we gave the LF a head start. That way everyone can be vaccinated for Mareks as soon as they come out the incubators. We hoped to have a some more blacks than we had so we’ll run another small batch with some more of those. These will be our breeders for next spring. We got a bit of a late start, but better late than never. We didn’t end up having enough black breeders to do our planned massive chocolate s*x linked hatch, so be looking out for in Fall of 2027 Lord willing. If you get a chance, say a prayer on our behalf for a successful hatch!

Fall has always been a reminder to me about how change can be good and many times necessary for true growth.

With that being said, we will be doing a mini series for the next couple of weeks on our personal progress with silkies. We have come a LONG way with our silkies but still have a LONG way to go to reach SOP (standards of Perfection).

So be on the look out over the next couple of weeks as we share our silkie progress along with some of the things we have learned along the way!

So today is lesson 1-our progress with getting a true black silkie.

Below-the two pictures on the left are from 2024-we started with 4 silkies by accident. We thought we had "black" silkies. Quickly learned they were "blue" silkies. Along with small crests and were not bearded at all.

The two pictures on the far right are from 2025-progress to better genetic black silkies by buying eggs from eBay to enhance the breed along with a new Roo. (Notice larger crests and a more shortened and compact body shape.)Even tried our hand with some satin silkies (bottom right) before we found our niche.

Middle-current 2026 true black silkie and boy is she pretty 🖤She was a show bird for us SPRING 2026 this year. Though she did not place in top 5-we received many compliments and are proud of the progress we have made.

The blacks were out and about in the yard today. Our rooster “Big Boy” is a thick one! Can’t wait to hatch a whole bunch of his babies here soon.

Well, we got our vaccines in for our fall hatch and our hens have pretty much quite laying on us! We went from about 30 eggs/day down to 6-7 🤦‍♂️. So much for the pretty weather. Not sure when we’re gonna have enough eggs to incubate. Anyone got any tips on how to boost egg production? We already use a premium feed. Don’t think changing that up will help.

For our local people, we’re trying out a new feed from the Co-op in Springfield, TN. Tucker Milling Show Flock Grand Champion. We already use their Show Flock 22% Layer feed and figured we’d sample a couple bags of this for conditioning show birds. It’s an 18% textured feed similar to Henhouse Reserve. Came out to $32/50lb bag. Our local Walmart has Henhouse Reserve for $21.99/30lb bag, so it comes out just a touch cheaper. If you want to order some yourself, they’ll have to special order it for you. It took about two weeks to come in. We’re gonna try it out on a pen or two and see how it goes!

We are ready for fall weather when these girls really start to "fluff" out. Can you imagine how she will look in the fall when she looks like this in the sweltering heat.

Happy ONE year "Gotcha day" to our Snow-❄️Snow came to us a year ago-we saved her from an Amish auction, she had no name, severely malnourished, covered in fleas, in need of a groom, and very afraid of men.

She is now bigger than Angel🐾🤣. She knows her name, has quite the personality, been the best companion for Angel, and loves Mark (most of the time).
