Reminder that even the funky veggies are good veggies.
In a world full of filters, airbrushing, and generative AI, remember that real life isn’t perfect, AND it doesn’t have to be! Farming is messy. Animal husbandry is messy. Gardening is messy. Real life is messy.
My cukes and banana peppers might be misshapen, my tomatoes a little funky, my bell pepper oddly long, but they’re tasty and nutritious and that’s all that matters

If there’s one thing I enjoy, it’s growing something funky in the garden. This year’s “funky” is Double Red sweet corn from Sow True Seed! Parts of the cornstalk, tassels, and all of the kernels come out in shades of red and purple!
It’s doing well! We’re anywhere from waist to chest high already and looking so cool with our purple accents!

Every year, I plant cucumbers for pickles and salads. Every year, I wait patiently for the tiny baby cukes to emerge and grow enough to be picked.
Every year, somehow they just magically multiply overnight and emerge either fully formed or WAY too big.
Case in point: none of these were there yesterday.
There’s some kind of garden sorcery involved in cucumbers or something 😂

The first of my garden cukes went into a salad for supper, but…first pickles of the season!
Homegrown cukes & homegrown dill!
I’ve tinkered with different pickle recipes over the last several years and I have 3 solid varieties: garlic dill, chili dill, and bread & butter!
I also still have my “experimental” pickles that I fiddle with the recipes on depending on ingredient availability.
There will be pickles in the farmstand by next week or so depending on plants!

And there’s about 1/6th of our year’s worth of hay for bovines and equines!
We make hundreds of round and square bales every summer, which after our splits with landowners, the occasional sale, and careful planning, still leaves us with more than enough for our year’s supply of hay for all of our animals! Ben covers roughly 150 acres of hay ground every cutting to keep our herd and many other farms and critters fed!

Friendly reminder, summer is the time to get stocked on hay, not February! Set up your hay storage!

A boy and his cows 💕
I’m reminded frequently how much we give to this lifestyle. How much time, energy, sacrifice. And I’m reminded more and more how much we have to be grateful for. It makes these quiet moments all the more special. Sitting with some of our 2026 calves, with fresh hay safely stored in the loft, and the remnants of a beautiful painted sky.
Don’t forget to enjoy the life you spend all that time building!
