Our Monday night schedule continues through October, albeit a little earlier to beat the sunset. 4:30 to 6:30 Monday evenings. Drop in any time during that time, there’s no such thing as being late to a volunteer time. No rsvp needed. We’ll also be at the orchard Saturday October 17th 1-4 pm. Lawrence Community Orchard is at 830 Garfield st. Park cars on Delaware street. Bring water and wear gardening clothes.
(Ps, I heard a rumor there’s going to be a paw paw cheesecake at the orchard tonight Monday 10/5! )

We’ve got a weekend workday at the orchard scheduled! Sunday Sept 20th 1-4pm. Sundays weather will be a bit cooler🎉 On Sunday we’ll be moving mulch, digging some holes for fence posts, pulling weeds and seeing what fruits we can snack on. Join us any time during the volunteer hours. Bring water and wear your gardening clothes. Please park on Delaware street. LCO is located at 830 Garfield street in East Lawrence.

Our Monday evening volunteer times continue through September. With earlier sunsets we’re starting a half hour earlier at 5:30pm. Drop in at your convenience. In September we’ll be harvesting jujubes, paw paws, figs and persimmons. Fruit trees took a pretty hard hit this season with a false spring and subsequent intense frost. Later we had significant fruit losses from squirrels. We’ll likely see all of our tree fruits harvested by the end of September so come experience the fruit before it’s too late. Our big project in September is assembling a propagation greenhouse that will serve us next March. Drop by on Mondays and lend a hand, meet great folks, get a tour, eat some fun fruits. Join our orchard team in August! Every Monday evening 6-8 p.m. we get together to tend the orchard. We socialize, share snacks, eat from the garden and pull some weeds. Anyone can join, no gardening experience necessary. Bring water, wear your gardening clothes, everything else is taken care of. Please park cars on Delaware street as parking on Garfield is limited.

It’s the time of year when leases are ending and people are moving. If you’re downsizing and have a garden shed with used but working tools and materials, LFTP will gladly receive donations of items such as:
- [ ] T-posts
- [ ] Soil amendments and fertilizer
- [ ] Yard tools of all sorts
- [ ] Outdoor seating
- [ ] Grill
- [ ] UV resistance tarps or trampoline tops
- [ ] Cinder blocks
- [ ] Nursery pots
- [ ] Milk crates or produce crates
- [ ] Cattle panel and wire fencing
- [ ] Plastic Buckets, barrels, and feed tubs
- [ ] Disposable dishware and utensils

Some scenes from our fig growing class last Thursday: We covered topics from the history of figs, anatomy, varietal selection, growing in pots and how to make sub-irrigated planters, growing in ground and over winter protection. Fig harvest season at the orchard will likely begin late August. If you want fig trees or have fig growing questions please send a message.

You can grow figs at home in a pot or in the ground! Come learn the basics of home fig production in this two hour session. We’ll learn about varietal selection, making potting mix, fertilization, winter protection and how to construct sub irrigated planters. Fig trees will be for sale &20-25. The class is free but donations are welcome. You must rsvp to [email protected] to reserve a spot. Parking at the orchard during events is reserved for folks with mobility challenges. Our regularly scheduled orchard magic continues through July! Every Monday night 6-8pm we’ll be at the orchard pullin’ weeds, tending trees and sharing snacks. All you need is a water bottle and your garden attire! Hanging out at the orchard is a great way to meet great folks and get your daily dose of nature. As we enter June our orchard is getting lush with vegetation! The garden vegetables are making leaps in size everyday! Tree fruits are growing!
