Poppy & Yarrow are back! 🦉 Our resident barn owl pair has returned to nest in the demonstration vineyard at the Lodi Wine Visitor Center.

Barn owls play an important role in vineyard ecosystems by helping to manage rodent populations naturally. Just one example of how thoughtful farming and nature thrive together in Lodi wine country.

And this season won’t last long. Nesting activity typically wraps up by late spring/early summer as the young chicks prepare to fledge and leave the nest.

🦉 Want a closer look? You can now peek inside the nest live via we**am, provided by Lauren M. Jackson, M.Sc. candidate at Cal Poly Humboldt.

🍷 Visiting Lodi soon? Be sure to stop by the Lodi Wine Visitor Center in the coming weeks to explore the vineyard while Poppy, Yarrow, and their chicks are still at home.

Ever noticed a small green seal on the back of a Lodi wine bottle that reads “Certified Green?”

That seal means the wine was made from grapes grown under LODI RULES, America’s original third-party certified sustainable winegrowing program.

Ahead of its time, LODI RULES grew out of a grassroots grower-led effort that began in 1992 and became a formal certification in 2005, built on over 150 farming standards covering ecosystem, water, soil, pest, and business management, plus human resources.

More than 25 Lodi tasting rooms pour wines made from LODI RULES certified grapes, spanning over 50 grape varieties. The Lodi Wine Visitor Center carries a curated selection too.

This Earth Day, learn more about how to sip sustainably and where to find wines bearing the LODI RULES seal locally. https://www.lodiwine.com/blog/Sip-Sustainably-in-Lodi--Where-to-Taste-LODI-RULES-Wines

Earlier this year, the Wine Institute gave California vintners a talking point to defend American wine against tariff pressure: wine is uniquely tied to its place of origin. Wines from one part of the world are not interchangeable with wines from another.

That principle is correct. Which is why Wine Institute's opposition to AB 1585 is worth examining closely.

AB 1585 would require that wine sold in California under an "American" label come from 100% American-grown grapes. Wine Institute opposes it — arguing the current rule, which allows up to 25% foreign wine in an "American" labeled bottle, provides necessary flexibility.

But the data tells a different story. Over the past two decades, a consistent pattern has emerged: when California grape prices rise, bulk wine imports surge — suppressing demand and pushing prices back down.

In 2025 alone, bulk wine imports increased 19%, adding roughly 45 million gallons into the U.S. market. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of tons of California fruit went unharvested.

Those two realities unfolding in parallel are not a coincidence.
Lodi Winegrape Commission Executive Director Stuart Spencer breaks down the arguments being made against AB 1585 — and why they don't hold up.

The bill goes to committee this month.

The question on the table in Sacramento right now: should wine labeled "American" be made from American grapes?

Our friends at California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) think the answer is yes — and so do we.

Here's something most wine drinkers don't know: a bottle labeled "American" can legally contain up to 25% foreign wine.

California AB 1585 would change that — requiring the label to mean what it says.

🍇 California farmers are suffering. Grapes are going unharvested, contracts canceled, vineyards removed.

📦 At the same time, foreign bulk wine is entering the U.S. and being labeled "American."

🏷️ AB 1585 closes that gap.

Not everyone in the industry agrees. And that's exactly why growers, vintners, and supporters need to speak up now — before this bill goes to committee.

🗳️ POLL: Should wine labeled "American" require 100% American grapes?

👍 Yes — labels should mean what they say
👎 No — flexibility is important
🤷 Not sure yet

There's a new energy driving Lodi wines, and the wine world is taking notice. James Suckling's latest tasting report – 100+ wines tasted – makes the case that the real story here is just getting started.

From Albariño and Graciano to Cinsault, Tempranillo, and stunning old-vine Zinfandel, what caught reviewer Jim Gordon's attention most was a lighter, fresher, more vibrant style emerging across the region. Wines with energy and personality that genuinely reflect this place.

Lodi has 80,000+ acres of vineyards, multi-generational farming families, and over 100 grape varieties growing in deep sandy soils. There's a lot to discover here. Read the full report here: https://www.jamessuckling.com/wine-tasting-reports/beyond-zinfandel-a-new-energy-drives-lodi-wines 🍷
