Still dreaming about our team field trip to Sun Sprout Farm.

We headed out to New York’s black dirt region to harvest garlic, walk the fields, and learn about what it takes to run a small organic farm. There’s really no substitute for seeing the work up close together. It always gives us an even deeper appreciation for the care, knowledge, and resilience that goes into growing our food.

Thank you Simon for having us. Until next time 💚

Notes From The Field ✍️🥬

It feels more important than ever to know where your food comes from and how it’s produced.

These are two of the farms behind the lettuce we’ve been enjoying lately. We’ve walked their fields, talked with the farmers, and seen firsthand the care that goes into every harvest.

Peak summer produce is here and what more could we ask for! From currants to cukes, and every possible tomato we can get our hands on, it’s a very good time to eat 🌽🍅

Jim and Kathy Lyons started Blue Moon Acres Farm in 1992 as a small CSA in Pennington, NJ. The next year they harvested their first micro greens and sold them to a New York City restaurant. Word spread chef to chef, and a small backyard operation grew into one of the most trusted names for greens in the Northeast.

The farm is a family business. Their equipment runs on biodiesel. The greenhouses are heated and cooled by geothermal. And Jim is still obsessed with soil biology, because that’s what makes the food taste as good as it does.

Food tastes better when you know who grew it. And trusting where your food comes from is more important than ever.

Tomato season is finally here ❤️‍🔥

Nothing really compares to peak local tomatoes. Sliced thick with good olive oil and salt, layered into Caprese, pan con tomate, or slow-roasted until they burst.

These are Fiorentino Costoluto from Taproot Farm, an Italian heirloom originally from Florence. Over the next few weeks we’ll be getting in varieties from many of our farm partners and can’t wait to see what you make.

Let the tomato content commence!

Our currant obsession…

With berry season underway, two varieties of currants arrived this week. Red currants from Hurd Orchards are tiny, jewel-bright, and grow in these dangling clusters called strigs. Unlike most berries bred sweeter over time, red currants have held onto their sharp, tart character. Packed with natural pectin, they’re great for jams and jellies, or as a sauce for roasted meats.

Black currants from FLX Farm Fresh are darker, deep purple, and have a slightly earthier flavor. Their tartness mellows into something deeper and slightly sweet when cooked. Wonderful in sauces with duck or pork, or stirred into yogurt. They’re also the main ingredient in crème de cassis.

A short window but a really fun one!
