Harvest 2026 is officially underway at The Crossvines! 🍇

This morning, we brought in our first load of grapes from our vineyard, beginning with one of our favorite varieties, Chardonel.

Chardonel is a late-ripening white hybrid developed at Cornell, a cross between Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay created in 1953 and released in 1990. It was bred to capture Chardonnay’s quality and acidity while adding the hardiness and productivity of Seyval.

It also holds a special place in the story of The Crossvines. Chardonel was the first grape we planted in our research vineyard back in 2019. Those vines produced their first fruit in 2021 and helped shape what this site would become.

This year’s crop is lighter following the severe April freeze that impacted vineyards across the Eastern Seaboard. Even so, Chardonel’s hardiness has really shone through, and we’re grateful to see this block persevere through the challenges of the season.

We’re fortunate to work alongside great growers throughout Maryland’s diverse landscapes, and grateful for what Mother Nature has given us this season.

We were also glad to welcome our partner and friend Dr. Joe Fiola from the University of Maryland, who stopped by this morning to check in on the vineyard and this year’s harvest.

As Harvest 2026 begins, we hope that all of our neighboring farmers and producers are able to make the best of a challenging year. Happy harvesting!
