Looking forward to seeing you all this season, sharing our successes and discussing our challenges.
Some Pre-season Tips
If you are growing in Garden Plots or Raised Bed structures you should add a couple inches of good compost and some fertilizer annually.
Adding fertilizer to raised beds requires a slightly different approach than in-ground gardening because the soil in raised beds often drains faster and loses nutrients more quickly. To determine the exact amount, you first need to calculate the square footage or cubic volume of your bed.
Balanced organic fertilizers are generally the safest and most effective choice. They release nutrients slowly and improve soil structure over time. All-Purpose Organic (e.g., 4-4-4 or 5-5-5) are good for general maintenance.
We will be selling Organic Fertilizer again this season in both 1-lb and 5-lb bags.
Options like Espoma Organic Plant-Tone are popular for consistent growth. Vegetable Specific (e.g., 3-4-4): Usually higher in phosphorus and potassium to support fruiting and root development.
Water-Soluble: Useful for a quick "boost" mid-season if plants look yellow or stunted, but these wash out of raised beds quickly.
Recommended Amount;
New Raised Bed is 1–2 lbs per 100 sq. ft. Mix into the top 6 inches of soil before planting.
Established Bed is 1 lb per 100 sq. ft. "Top-dress" by sprinkling around the base of plants and lightly raking it in.
Potted/Small Beds 1–2 tablespoons per plant. Apply every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
"Compost is King: Before adding chemical or granular fertilizer, adding 1–2 inches of fresh Compost or Manure every spring provides a massive boost of micronutrients that standard fertilizers lack.
Don't Over-Fertilize: In the confined space of a raised bed, it is easy to "burn" roots with too much synthetic nitrogen. When in doubt, use a little less than the bag recommends.
See you soon!
