Washmo Tiny Farm

Washmo Tiny Farm My husband and I are raising chickens and growing as much food as possible on our tiny homestead. This is our story. I’m here to tell you that you can do it!

We started slow and small in 2023. Our chicken run and garden has tripled since then.

I may be a little obsessed. Who knew a bunch of chickens would grab my heart💕

I’ve had great luck letting broody hens hatch in the coop. I’ve tried to separate them before in the tiny coop you see in the back of the run. I thought I needed a “maternity ward”. That turned out to be a waste of time. The hens (mostly) know what to do. I do have one bad mama but she gives her chicks to the good mamas. The rest of the flock accepts them so there is no integration needed. So much easier than incubated chicks who have to grow out separately and get integrated. It’s a nice break at the end of hatching season.

Some of our garlic was ready to harvest! This is the first year we have had success with growing garlic! Everything we have read said to plant by Halloween and harvest on the 4th of July. These needed to come out before the 4th. We still have more in. Who follows the guidelines strictly and who goes with their gut?

It’s normal for egg production to start slowing down I the summer. Weather changes make a difference in laying. It’s hot, it rains a lot and they are adapting to their needs of staying cool. Also, their hormones are telling them to hatch chicks. Broody hens who are sitting on eggs stop laying once they start sitting. Mama hens won’t start laying again until they are done raising their chicks for about 6-8 weeks. So don’t worry if your egg production goes down. I’ve got one currently raising chicks and 3 sitting on eggs. I’m down 4 regular layers and the rest are hot and tired! My egg production has been cut in half. Not a big deal for us. We still have more than enough!

Who else is easily entertained by chickens?

Pumpkin is a good Mama. She keeps her babies close and teaches them all of the chicken things!

Frank got a new litter box made for bunnies. He was using the cat one that I gave him but still p**ped by his food. A little reading told me that bunnies like to p**p while eating! Who knew! I hope he likes his new p**p diner😂 don’t mind the floor, his rug is in the wash! I’ll link the box in the comments

It takes some time but they do start instinctively putting themselves to bed!

This is my Queenie. She is from my first flock that I got as day old chicks from Bacott Farm and Creative Decor Union MO. Queenie is a survivor, she got picked on as a pullet and some of the others scalped her! We got her healed up, and it happened again! After removing the bully, Queenie healed up again and went on to become the head hen! She ruled the roost! She has been a leader and welcoming committee to all of the chicks that have joined our flock since! She is over 3 years old now and quietly keeps everyone in line. The personality on these birds is truly amazing! ❤️
