It’s time for some yellow! Mom is starting with a bright yellow to accentuate the denim blue yarn she just made, and then she will head into some other yellow blends. The machine you are looking at right now is the separator. It gets the label of slowest machine in the line up but it really is essential to help us get the yarn as consistent as we can.

We recently learned that sheep really like apple tree leaves. They have decided for us which branches will be pruned off next spring (final pic)! They have access as we rotate them through our front yard “pasture” which has been a fun experiment this summer.

Some of the things in our booth aren’t made by us.

They’re made by other local makers we’ve been lucky to find and get to work with.

Dave, from North of 58 Custom Woodworking, has been working with us almost since the beginning of the farm. He makes our drop spindles, nostepinne yarn winders and yarn bells. Every so often we come to him with something a little different, too, like batches of wooden Christmas trees for weaving.

Dave is an exceptionally talented woodworker. His pieces are beautifully made, meant to be used, and made to such a standard that they will last. Just as importantly to us, he’s someone we genuinely like working with and a great guy!

There is a remarkable amount of talent here in Thunder Bay, and whenever we can, we’d rather find the person locally who does something exceptionally well than try to do everything ourselves.

So when you see Dave’s woodwork sitting alongside our wool at the booth, it isn’t there simply because it’s local. It’s there because it’s very good.

We feel pretty fortunate that the two happen to be the same thing. Dave Hainrich The TBay Market • Farmer's Market • Open Year Round

This is our tallow-based traditional sea salt soap right before the final mix and then right after in the molds. There was a bit of a learning curve to this soap because the salt makes it harden really quickly. As a result I make it in really small batch sizes with its own individual cavity molds so I can get the full mixture into the molds in time- and then get them out without needing to cut. It’s worth the effort though as the salt makes the skin feel really soft. Batches right now mean we will be back in stock soon.

Last year, poor Brody had the worst year haying, so I’m very happy to report that this year was probably our best to date. Everything is cut and baled, and all that’s left is bringing the bales back to the barn for storage.

As newer farmers, hay and haying has been an area of huge learning for us, and we still have so much to learn. One of the things we did this year was buy the moisture meter you see in the picture. Hay is so important to us that it felt like a worthwhile investment. The wrong moisture level can ruin the whole bale.

We used it after the first bale was made in the field to make sure we should keep baling, and now we’re using it, along with temperature feature, to make sure the bales are ready to go into storage. So far, it has given us more confidence that we’re making the right decisions. 🤞🏻

⭐️ ⭐️ 2 out of 5 stars.
Ecologically responsible, but ultimately not effective.

These sheep advertised their services as a lawnmower replacement, and I have to say that my expectations were not met. Their work is uneven with some areas heavily mowed and other areas not touched at all. Even with constant reminders about which plants to leave alone, they turned multiple perennial shrubs into sticks. They do not mind where they step and have damaged all my rhubarb. A few times now they have walked right in to the building (without wiping their dirty feet!) and helped themselves to whatever they wanted. They need near constant supervision, which is just exhausting for me. It’s been a couple weeks and they’re not even close to done! They do not clean up after themselves so there’s p**p everywhere. I spoke to their manager, Brienne, but she just kind of shrugged and walked away. Just not open to feedback at all. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this flock of sheep. (😀 just joking, we love them just maybe not as lawnmowers)
