Fertilizer price increase has been in the news. Standard recommendation for corn used to be to use 1 pound of nitrogen per target bushel per acre of corn yield. Ex: 230 bushel of corn, 230 pounds of nitrogen. We don't need that much anymore.

My fields show typical yield curves that flatten out with higher rates. Precision Conservation Management five year data for my farm has ratio at 0.75 # N/bu corn yield. Range of 0.65 to 0.84. Corn is planted as no-till with starter fertilizer at planting & second pass of N applied as side dress at knee high corn.

The nitrogen rate calculator on University websites is a good start at picking nitrogen rates. Weather changes things up but if you don't want to flush dollars down the drain, take a closer look at nitrogen rates.

And a note for the non-farmers - soybeans get the nitrogen from the air. We don't add nitrogen fertilizer to the soybean crop.
