Cañada de la Virgen, located about an hour from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a fascinating archaeological site. Research indicates that it was constructed by the Nahuas; however, some findings suggest it may have been built by the Otomí around a thousand years ago. This site is situated near the northern frontier of the Mesoamerican world, marking a significant boundary for pyramid-building civilizations. Beyond this region, evidence of such cultures has yet to be discovered, making Cañada de la Virgen a pivotal marker in the historical narrative of Mesoamerica.

The best moments were never on the itinerary.

You know the ones.

You had an hour or two to kill and thought, “What the hell, let’s go.”

The hike you almost skipped. The road you almost didn’t take. The small bar you walked into for one drink. The stranger who heard where you were from and said, “Come on, let me show you my city.”
And by the end of the day, they weren’t a stranger anymore.

That is what Pursue the Unfamiliar has always meant to me.

It is not just about travel. It is about what happens when you step outside the plan long enough for life to surprise you.

That mindset has taken me across unfamiliar landscapes, into distilleries, beside producers, into homes, fields, cellars, and conversations I never could have planned.
And every time, I came back with something more than a photo.

A story.A friendship.A different way of seeing the world.

That is what I am building Jeff Bradford Selections around.
Not just bottles.
Connection.
The people, places, and traditions behind what we drink.

October 1 is getting closer.

So I want to know: what was yours?

The detour you almost didn’t take, or the stranger who showed you their city?

Tell me. I’ll go first in the comments.

Stockholm is more than a city of beautiful bars and great drinks.

It is a place where hospitality feels personal, where ingredients carry memory, and where the people behind the bar help you understand the culture one conversation at a time.

This episode of Drink Destinations is about more than what is in the glass. It is about the rooms, rituals, neighborhoods, bartenders, and moments that make Stockholm feel alive.

A huge thank you to and for helping me film and edit this story with care, patience, and an eye for the details that make the city feel honest.

Drink Destinations: Stockholm, a portrait of Sweden, one room and one welcome at a time.

This is Salmiana agave next to Espadín.

Espadín is beautiful. Reliable. The backbone of the industry for a reason.

But Salmiana is different.

This plant is massive. Some piñas can weigh hundreds of pounds. It grows taller than a person and wider than most people ever expect. When you stand next to one, you understand it immediately.

This is not just a plant.
It feels like a monument.

And this is one of the reasons certain mezcals cost more. It is not hype. It is the species. The years in the ground. The size. The sugar. The harvest. The people cutting it, carrying it, cooking it, fermenting it, and distilling it.

All of that lives inside the bottle.

I believe an educated consumer is mezcal’s greatest ally.

Because when you understand what is in your glass, you are not just drinking mezcal.

You are helping protect the craft, the culture, and the people behind it.

For some that know, I served in the US ARMY for 20 years & 5 years of that time was in a combat environment.

Today marks a tough day for any service member, past or present. Memorial day we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

A lot of thoughts, memories are racing through my mind today. One of the hardest things I had to do was speak at a funeral for one of my soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat. To see the hurt, pain, sadness in fellow soldiers & family is something I hope no one ever has to endure. All I can think and wish is to take the pain & suffering away from each & everyone of them.

Each fallen is the son or daughter, brother or sister, husband or wife, dad or mom & each is unique, each is special. We owe each our very best, to be the best version of ourselves, living a life worthy of those who are missed - even when that seems impossibly hard; the fallen deserve nothing less.

While I was traveling around Peru learning about Pisco, I took a “quick detour” at Lake Titicaca on my way to the highest elevation winery in the world and stumbled onto one of the most extraordinary stories I’ve ever encountered.

The Uros of Lake Titicaca have been living on hand-crafted floating islands since before the Inca Empire fell. No conquest ever reached them. No force of nature has stopped them. Just reed, water, and an unbreakable will to live on their own terms.

This is one of those places that quietly humbles you. 🇵🇪.

I love sharing the process and the people behind the bottle. These photos are a glimpse into a collab I’m doing now for Jeff Bradford Selections launching in October.

This is for the workers never tagged. Never mentioned in the tasting notes. Never seen when you pour a glass.

But without them, there is no bottle, especially in mezcal.

I had the honor of working with Alejandro Vasconcelos Peña and his team in Guanajuato. They carry something that cannot be bottled alone.

Knowledge, relentless physical labor, and a deep connection to the land and the plant that most of us will never fully understand.

Mezcal is not made quickly. It is roasted and cooked, Crushed by hand, by mulching or by stone. Fermented open to the air. Distilled slowly, carefully, with intention.

This process is ancient. It is rooted in Mexican history long before mezcal had a market, a moment, or a movement.

And it is exhausting work.

So the next time you hold a glass of mezcal, remember these videos & photos.

Remember these people.

Remember that what you are drinking is not just a spirit.

It is someone’s life’s work.

Honor that. Share that. Respect it accordingly.

Salud to the trabajadores of Noble Indulto: Me, Alex, Alberto (Beto), Miguel, Ignacio (Nacho).
