Our deepest condolences to Jeff and Eva Hepper and family on the tragic loss of young Coy.

Remembering Cowboy Coy Lane Hepper
Our rodeo family is heartbroken over the sudden and impossibly sad loss of cowboy young gun Coy Lane Hepper on Friday, June 4 at 14. The youngest son of Jeff and Eva Hepper’s ranching and rodeo family from Keene, North Dakota, and his twin sister, Kari, just had a banner North Dakota Junior High Rodeo Finals two weeks ago in Bowman, where both talented eighth graders qualified for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo, which is coming up June 20-26 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Coy was crowned the North Dakota State Champion in both the ba****ck steer riding and bull riding. Kari qualified for Des Moines in pole bending and goat tying, and is the 2021 North Dakota Junior High All-Around Cowgirl.

Small but mighty, Coy had big plans to keep his yearlong riding streak alive at the Junior High Finals, and had recently told Kari in the back seat of the truck riding home from a rodeo, “I’m going to Jim Sharp ’em in Des Moines.” Coy was, of course, referring to Jim Sharp being the first bull rider ever to go 10-for-10 at the National Finals Rodeo, when he did it in 1988.

Coy also chute dogged and team roped, and he was pretty proud of being handy enough to switch ends in the team roping. The Heppers are a determined, competitive crew, so Coy came by that naturally. Big brother and North Dakota State University grad Jade rodeoed in his younger years, and was a standout wrestler in high school. Big sister Abby just qualified for her first College National Finals Rodeo, and will represent Southwestern Oklahoma State University June 13-19 in Casper, Wyoming, as the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Central Plains Region Barrel Racing Champ.

Cowboy Coy was quite the wrestler, too. He loved purple, and was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan. He looked up to NFR ba****ck rider Ty Breuer, who quite coolly showed up for Coy when he competed at the Junior World Finals in Vegas to help him on the back of the chutes.

Fierce competitor Coy naturally knew where that fine like between confidence and cockiness was—and never crossed it. The only code people couldn’t quite crack about Coy was whether he loved to win or hated to lose more. That was a coin toss, but sure led to a lot of W’s in Coy’s cowboy accomplishments column.

Mom Eva remembers Coy heading to the locker room with a second-place wrestling trophy one time, then emerging after his post-match shower empty-handed. She asked him where the trophy was. He’d trashed it. To this day, Coy’s bedroom is crowded with trophies, medals and buckles from his countless achievements. But if you care to see any of his runner-up hardware, you’ll have to dig. Or better yet, find a dumpster.

Coy was a character. He was funny, and famous for “showing up for people, lighting up every room he walked into, and the best one liners.” Coy was one of those kids who somehow found a way to be ultra-competitive and yet so kind that even his rodeo rivals rooted for him.

Coy was fearless in the rodeo arena, and at the poker table, too. No favor was ever handed to kids at the Heppers’ famous holiday poker fests, so he stepped up, played like a man and took their money. Coy had big plans for that poker winnings envelope of his.

Coy died of yet-unknown causes, and his heartbroken family will be branding calves with the help of family, neighbors and friends to try and stay busy while they await autopsy results.

Everyone who knew and loved Coy is in shock and borderline speechless right now. But when a few words break the sad silence, they’re saying things like…

“Coy was going to be one of the greats.”

“Coy’s smile was huge.”

“Coy was small, but he lived a big life.”

As for me, well, I don’t know what else to say besides…

Eva and Jeff, Jade, Abby and Kari, we love you. Prayers for peace in your hurting hearts while your beautiful boy makes headlines in Heaven. 💜🤠

~Thank You, Robin Anderson, for being my North Dakota Rodeo Mom Counterpart, and Cheryl Schmidt, for the perfect picture of Cowboy Coy~

It’s that time of year again.
In one week we’ll be getting our mares under lights in preparation for the 2021 breeding season.
For our stalled horses, our lights come on at 6:30am and go off at 10pm. Remember a period of darkness is just as critical as the length of ‘day’ light.
Our larger groups of pasture mares come up at dusk into these light pens, and hang out until 10pm, where they are then turned back out to pasture.
If you have any questions about lighting your mares or stallions, boys need the light too, ask us and we can help you make a plan for your horses.

Breeding Season

Breeding Season is right around the corner, and we’re here to aid in all of you and your mare’s needs. No matter if you’re breeding to one of the stallions here at the ranch, or we’re receiving semen from an outside horse, we strive to get your mare safely in foal as quick and as economical as possible. If you live close and have time, we accept haul ins, or leave her with us when she’s ready for a few days, take her home and bring her back for her first pregnancy check. We’re about making the process easy for you and your mare.
