Strawberry update for Sunday, May 31

Updated 1230; we are sold out of pre-pick strawberries for the day

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our strawberry harvest season so far! We still have many many days to go and that is good news we all can celebrate.
Tomorrow our Home Farm in Hamilton is closed for ripening but will re-open for good picking on Monday. Sunday evening around 6pm reservations will be available for Monday.
Our Oatlands field for tomorrow was posted about 6pm and sold out rather quickly. I anticipate being open at Oatlands as well on Monday but reserve the right to change that decision after I walk it tomorrow evening to check supply.
We will be open tomorrow (Sunday) at our Gilberts Corner location 9-3ish with a limited amount of pre-picked strawberries. Right now our field is jogging berries and not sprinting berries like it has been for the last several weeks. And that’s okay. We all can’t sprint forever. We also will be baking fresh donuts as tomorrow’s flavors will be strawberry glaze +cinnamon sugar+chocolate frosted. Our new amazing strawberry jam and Grutos soft serve ice cream have will we.
May the strawberry force be with you. 🍓

Strawberry Update for Saturday, May 30
Update 11:30 from the field; we are all sold out of strawberries at Gilberts Corner for the day. We have a lot of fresh baked donuts, ice cream and strawberry jam. We will have more strawberries tomorrow morning

We finally got our strawberry jam in stock! As soon as we got it I ate it by the spoonful (because that’s what a strawberry lover x infinity does) to make sure it was good. And it’s incredible. We will be selling it at all field locations starting tomorrow by the jar or by the 12 jar case.
We will be open at our Gilbert’s Corner market location from 9-3ish. We will have a somewhat limited amount of pre-picked strawberries I think as the field has had a lot of berries go off of it this week. We will have fresh baked donuts (our famous strawberry glaze and cinnamon sugar) and Gruto’s soft serve ice cream flavors of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry (made with our berries!)
All reservations for our Home farm and Oatlands locations sold out earlier this evening when posted around 6. We apologize for all those that got caught up in another website hiccup. 😞
It was down just a little while during reservation time. Earlier this week we switched over to our 3rd web host server 🤷‍♂️. Website traffic volume has been a challenge for us and this strawberry farmer is a little frustrated about it....
Thank you all for your support, sharing pictures and overall enthusiasm for strawberries. We’ve got a lot of strawberry season ahead of us yet as we are only in about the 2nd quarter of the season.
Have a berry good evening 🍓

Updated 12 noon Friday. We are all sold out for the day of pre-picked strawberries for the day. It’s getting warm and I’ve made the decision to get our pickers out of the heat. We will be back at Gilberts tomorrow starting at 9.

Strawberry Update for Friday, May 29
Wow, warmer temperatures have initiated a berry ripening explosion in the fields! This is strawberry season in it’s glory when you literally step near the field and smell the aroma and see RED. Red berries just hanging from the plants almost everywhere you look. Picking strawberries is a good time no matter what but right now it’s spectacular.
Tonight at about 6 we made reservations available for tomorrow and they all sold out fairly quickly. For all you newbies who don’t usually read my FB posts...we are only on picking day #14 and we have a lot of glorious days left in the harvest season. Every night and especially tonight walking the field and evaluating supply was pure joy. This happens every night to determine the number of reservations slots for the next day. We don’t do advance reservations because I can’t predict the future and what the supply situation will be.
Our social distancing plan and procedures are working successfully! Thank you all for following the rules and listening to our Patch Bosses. Many many more days ahead of strawberry harvest, so we look forward to seeing you in the field soon.
Tomorrow (Friday) we will be at our Gilbert’s Corner location (39958 John Mosby Hwy Aldie) from 9-2ish with beautiful pre-picked strawberries (like the ones pictured below). Here’s how it works:
We start picking at day-break so we have a bunch at the white tent at 9. Then approx every 1.5hrs I bring another load up of fresh picked berries to the white tent. So if we happen to be out at the white tent it’s temporary as I continue to bring more up all the time. We do take a lunch break and the last load usually comes up to the tent at about 1:30. I think this is a better way to do it rather than pick them all and then open at 2. This way you are getting them right from the field picked less than an hour before you take them home. It’s as fresh as it gets! Also, tomorrow we will have Gruto’s soft serve strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice cream (frozen for portability) And our fresh baked donuts including our famous strawberry glaze + cinnamon sugar and another flavor yet to be decided until tomorrow at about 3am when I get the baking started! Have a berry good night everyone. 🍓

The picking is good right now! The temps have been warmer and are ripening up the berries nicely.

We will not be at our Gilberts corner location Tomorrow Thursday for pre-picked. We plan to be back there Friday and through the weekend.
This is only picking day #12 in a 5-6 week long harvest season. 🍓❤️

Strawberry update for Wednesday, March 27

With some beautiful weather the last couple of days, it really seems like we are now at full strength with all of our fields as ripening is happening very fast now.
We will be open at our Gilbert’s Corner location (39958 John Mosby Hwy, Aldie) tomorrow from 9-3 ish or until sold out. Important detail: we will have fresh baked donuts starting at 9am BUT we will not have pre-picked strawberries ready until about 10:30-11. Then we will have some incredible buckets like the one pictured below. I expect a large supply so tomorrow would be a good day to get a mid-week strawberry nutrition boost. If you can’t make it until after 1, plz dm us and I will let u know the supply situation. I will also update this post as well if we sell out. We will also have Gruto’s soft serve ice cream with flavors vanilla, chocolate and strawberry to choose from.
After I walked the fields tonight, we were able to post reservation slots for tomorrow at 6.pm. They sold out in about an hour which is a little bit longer than it has been in previous nights. My goal is to always post as close to 6 as possible. However farming isn’t like clockwork. For example, yesterday I had an equipment breakdown and that delayed me until posting a little after 7. But in general, 6-9 is the range and my goal is as close to 6 as possible.
One of the most frequent questions about picking this year is, “Can I bring my kids to the field to pick?” Yes! Please bring your well behaved kids to the field so they can experience an agricultural activity of picking their own food with their family. It will create a lasting memory and teach them a little bit about where their food (strawberries) come from. We ask that you respectfully listen to our Patch Bosses as they will assign you to your very own row to pick on. It’s very important you stay on your row. If you happen to need any help or have questions, please ask our Patch Bosses. They are there to help you and make your picking experience a good one with your family. That is important to us.
We are only just entering the 2nd quarter of our magical strawberry season. A lot more glorious days ahead!

05/26/2020

Updated at 11:30 AM Tuesday; we have about 25 beautiful pre-picked buckets of strawberries at our Oatlands location today. If interested, just drive up to the hut and ask Staci or Riley and they will help you out. If driving from a distance please message us and I will get back with you right away about availability..

Strawberry Update for Tuesday, May 26

We are going to let our Gilbert’s Corner pre-picked field rest a little tomorrow and so we will not be at our Gilberts Corner location with pre-picked strawberries tomorrow. I expect to be back there on Wednesday with all of our heavenly desert package (strawberries, donuts & soft serve ice cream)

Both of our Upick locations at the home farm and Oatlands are sold out of reservations for tomorrow.
As you know, I walk the fields every night and evaluate the supply and then make the appropriate number of slots available. As I was walking tonight I was admiring how good the plants look and how many flowers they are still producing. You know what that means?! Perhaps a longer season than expected. As long as the weather doesn’t get too hot, I expect our incredible plants to be producing strawberries for another 4-5 weeks. We are only on picking day #10 so we have a lot of glorious days left to get a reservation or 2..or more. Thanks everyone for your patience. We are prioritizing making sure our reservations are spaced out throughout the day evenly and keeping families separated out over the acres and acres of fields we have. It is important to us that you have a great picking and family experience when you visit. And that means plentiful berries to pick and a lot of space to ease your mind.
Thanks again for all of your kind comments and enthusiasm for strawberries!

We are sold out of pre-picked strawberries at Gilberts Corner

Strawberry Update for Memorial Day, May 25

We honor the men and women who have sacrificed their life for our freedom.

****Moment of Silence ****

All reservations for our Home Farm in Hamilton and Oatlands in Leesburg are sold out for Monday. We post the reservation slots on our website each evening after I walk the fields to evaluate the supply situation. The encouraging good news is that we are only on day #9 of a 5-6 week picking season. Basically the magical strawberry has just gotten underway and we are mid-way through the first quarter.
We will be at Gilbert’s Corner tomorrow 9-1ish with fresh baked donuts and some awesome Gruto’s Soft Serve ice cream. Did u know they make strawberry soft serve with our strawberries?! It’s sooo good. Donut flavors will be a mixed box of cinnamon sugar+strawberry glaze+I can’t decide between lemon glaze or blueberry glaze? Thoughts?
We will also have pre-picked strawberries! Although I’m not sure how many will come off the field tomorrow. Probably around 150 buckets but don’t quote me on that. It’s always a mystery until we start filling them up at day-break.

A lot of incredible encouraging comments from all of you in last night’s post. Thank you. We need positivity in life and that’s what you will find in our strawberry world.

2:30 update: Sold out of strawberries and donuts!
Thanks everyone. We will be back here tomorrow at Gilberts corner for limited prepicked and more donuts and ice cream
Will have an evening update later

11am Update Sunday:
We are trying to brighten up your Memorial Day Weekend. We’ve got a lot of incredible strawberries right now at the Gilbert’s Corner market (39958 John Mosby Hwy, Aldie) Pictured is our awesome team of Erik, Riley, Jonathon and Lauren (I am behind the iPhone 11 camera) I was able to get extra help this morning at day-break to keep up with the picking today. We are here until 4ish or until we sell out. First come first serve. (If coming later, dm us and I will let u know about availability)
* prepicked is a good option for those who haven’t been able to secure a upick reservation yet. We are trying to get as many people fresh strawberries who want them for their family.
Regarding upick reservations for tomorrow: I will be walking our fields later this evening to evaluate supply and determine how many reservation slots to make available for tomorrow. They will be posted on our website later tonight.
Have a great day everyone.

Strawberry Update for Sunday, May 24

For many of you who have visited our Home Farm in Hamilton over the years, you have gotten to know Grandpa “Patch Boss” Wegmeyer. Grandpa (my amazing dad) came from his dairy farm in Michigan to once again give a helping hand to his family. Even though we “strongly suggested” he not make the trip this year, he didn’t listen. He wasn’t going to miss it. So if you see him, please no hugs! Just say hi from a distance as he shows you to your row.
The weather has turned warmer and the strawberries are ripening faster! As a result we opened up more slots for reservations tomorrow however they sold out in minutes...wow
I’ve debated whether to bring this up but I feel compelled to to try and bring some perspective to the situation. There is probably less than 1% who follow us who are being extremly critical and using very hurtful words in emails and direct messages to us. Most all of you are very supportive of what we are trying to do and doing it to the best of our abilities to provide a nutritious food option/activity for your family. And we appreciate it more than you know. The main issue seems to mostly be regarding our reservation system and problems that are occurring either at check out or just missing it before it’s sold out. I’m sorry to those who have not been successful yet. I can tell you all again and most of you know that we have to have a reservation system to keep everyone safe and not have crowds. We’d much rather have crowds on our website than in our field all at once. The volume of traffic on our website is astounding for even this strawberry farmer to comprehend. We are beyond grateful for your interest in strawberries.
Please know this: we continue to work to resolve web issues. This is only day #8 in the 5-6 week harvest season. Please put this all into perspective. This is strawberry picking. It’s a fun bonus activity for your family to get healthy food. Thanks for letting me get that out.

Tomorrow at Gilbert’s Corner we will have pre-picked available 9-3ish. Also Fresh baked donuts and Gruto’s soft serve ice cream. A little issue we had to today was timing. A lot of folks came at the same time so we got behind in picking (we are going as fast as we can) but we got caught up about 1 and had plenty of berries to finish the day.
Tomorrow we will be picking a lot again. If they aren’t under the white tent, I will be bringing them up shortly. Having prepicked at Gilberts has allowed us to get more people the opportunity to get fresh strawberries.
Again, thanks for following us and your interest in our farm. ❤️

Updated 2:45: We finally caught up! We have about 55 buckets left and are here until about 4 with donuts and a Gruto’s soft serve ice cream. Flavors left are vanilla and strawberry (made with our strawberries)

Updated Saturday (9:25am) for Gilbert’s Corner:
We currently have a very long line for pre-picked strawberries and are picking a lot of berries with our professional pickers however we can’t keep up ! 🤷‍♂️
We are going as fast as we can and will have berries throughout the day but the timing is key.
As soon as I come up to the white tent with a load of fresh picked berries ....they are going home to good homes and we can’t keep anything in stock.
Thanks berry much for your patience. 🍓

Today I made homemade strawberry syrup. For dessert tonight I took one of your homemade donuts, added the strawberry syrup, put on some ice cream and added whipped cream. I now have a very happy hubby.
Will you please let me know if you use pesticide at your farm? I cannot find your farming practice, so any information you can provide or shared will be very helpful. Thank you in advance!
Might want to wait till later to go to Gilberts so they can catch up. First batch of berries sold out to first 5 in line. Waiting for next batch in line.....
How upsetting! I’ve been sitting here the last 3 hours, checking every 10 minutes, waiting for times to post for tomorrow and was just looking at the main screen that said times pending, not realizing they were posted through another page and already sold out!
Gilbert’s only has donuts till later today. Found that out after 40 min drive there☹️
This week’s strawberry CSA baking project: chocolate cake with whipped cream and fresh berries. Designed and decorated by Guy, 4, and Mac, 2. It’s delicious!
We bought some strawberries the other day and they are delicious! But how do you recommend storing them - in the refrigerator or on the countertop?
Your U-Pick sign up is not working again. It fails in btw each time I try to choose a new time slot to buy. And sometimes after I have "cleared" my choice and chosen a new time, it tells me I must make a selection. I know you are aware of problems - just giving you a few more details that might help.
How do we get through to make a reservation for picking? Website is down and no one answers phone. Anything available for Saturday afternoon May 16? Or how can we make arrangements to drive through to get berries? Any information is appreciated.
How do I order donuts? I want to come out to the Gilbert’s location but don’t want to make a mistake and not order if needed. Also what’s the address I should use to find you?
Hello. I'm trying to book U-Pick tickets for tomorrow and I kept encountering problems with the website. Is there an alternative to booking for tomorrow? Thank You
Question - how do you keep animals from eating the berries?
