Today we finished harvesting our sweet potatoes! Those will start coming to market in the next couple weeks once they’re done curing.

This weekend you can find an abundance of pumpkins at the Hampstead Fall Festival and Fell's Point Farmers Market. It’s time to officially break out all the fall decor and start making soup with the cooler weather.

We sadly won’t be at Mt. Washington Farmers Market this weekend, but we’ll be back to our regular schedule next week. Happy fall ya’ll! 🍁🥘

We use cover crops as part of our holistic approach to organic land management. As we expand into our new site at Mint Meadows, I want to proactively build soil health by integrating cover crops into our crop plan.

UMD accepted us into their Advanced Cover Cropping Program, so I’m receiving financial and technical assistance with this project. I’m grateful to have someone to call when a technical or logistical problem arises, which is pretty often in farming! Plus, the financial assistance for cover crop seed helps reduce the burden of learning new ways to fail, to grow, and to manage cover crops.

In this case, I’m keeping the plan simple—planting winter rye and hairy vetch because they’re reliable winter cover crops that help us achieve our goals of smothering weeds, building organic matter, and scavenging for nutrients.

The rye and vetch will germinate and grow a little this fall, and then keep the soil protected over the winter. Once spring arrives, these crops will grow rapidly! I’m looking forward to building my knowledge of this side of farming. My vision is to keep 1/3 of my farm in cover crops at all times. This will build soil health and establish long-term fertility naturally over time.

Today was an exceptional harvest day. Due to the forecasted several days of rain that could lead to significant crop loss, we had to pick all of our butternut squash and the rest of our pumpkins! We’re not sure of the numbers yet, but we estimate that we harvested upward of 1500 lb in just the first 4 hours of our day. The remainder of the day was business as usual: harvest and pack for our farmers markets, CSA, and produce stand. We’ll be sleeping well tonight!

Now, we let the squashes cure in our tunnel to let them concentrate their sugars and dry out for storage. Butternut squash can store for about 5-6 months, and they get sweeter with time! We harvested the last of the watermelons today! We’ve had a great melon season and are now looking forward to our winter squashes.

This time of year showcases a delicious overlap of both late summer and early fall food. Come enjoy the mixing of seasons this weekend at Fell's Point Farmers Market, Mt. Washington Farmers Market, and produce stand.

Calling all Maryland farmers!

Next week, the National Farmers Union is hosting its annual farmer fly-in, where farmers go to Capitol Hill to tell their stories to lawmakers.

A farm bill hasn’t passed since 2018. The average age of a farmer is 58. Farm bailouts don’t reach family farms. Federal nutrition benefits saw their largest cut in US history. We shouldn’t need grants and handouts to make this occupation work. Lawyers and lobbyists aren’t writing laws and policies that protect and preserve family farms.

So, join Nick Healy and Wild Kid Acres | Western Riding, Trail & Pony Rides, Farm Tours next week in DC. We need more Marylanders to attend. If farmers from California, Hawaii, and Minnesota can make it, we can show up. It’s only a short drive away.

This is an opportunity to share your voice with the Maryland federal delegation—senate and house representatives—so they understand what it means to farm in this state.

New systems = new challenges.

As we transition from hand weeding to mechanical cultivation, new challenges arise. Sometimes troubleshooting just feels like trouble, but in the end, it’ll pay off, and we’ll be able to produce more food with less labor.

One of my challenges with this tractor is driving straight. Even though I’m totally sober, my steering is a little erratic, leading to zigzag seeding patterns in my crops. This makes mechanical cultivation nearly impossible to do efficiently.

In short, it takes longer than working manually, so it’s actually counterproductive in the short term. But—eventually—I’ll get it.

The thing is: It doesn’t come naturally to steer with a controller, so I have to learn, essentially, how to be a better gamer. This off season, I might just need to play some racing video games for work to improve my steering for next year.

So, basically, what I’m asking is: Does anyone want to play Mario Kart with me from December to February? 🙄😂

This week, we harvested 1.5 tons of food, including 900 lb of watermelon!

August is a month of abundance: we’ve harvested 3,900 lb in total! It’s exciting to see just how much food we can grow on a small footprint.

Snag an organic, red seeded watermelon this weekend at Fell's Point Farmers Market, Mt. Washington Farmers Market, and at our produce stand.
